Michael Vick Finally Gets Sentenced December 10, 2007
Posted by Pulin Modi | Permalink | Comments ( 24 ) | TrackBackMichael Vick was finally sentenced on federal charges, and we are pleased with the strong punishment handed down in this dogfighting case. It's good to know that this cruelty is seen as a serious crime! Michael Vick has been sentenced to 23 months in prison for financing a dogfighting ring and for his part in the killing of pit bulls who did not fight aggressively. He also received three years' probation. Thousands of others involved in this underground world of violence and callousness need to learn a lesson from this very public case.

Other than the federal punishment, though, the state level trial is still pending so we want to really demand vigorous state prosecution now!
Respectfully remind The Honorable Gerald G. Poindexter, Commonwealth Attorney, that a vigorous prosecution of this and any cruelty case—and the pursuit of serious penalties against animal abusers upon conviction—is in the best interests of the county's human and animal residents and sends the message that the defenseless must be safeguarded and that cruelty will not be tolerated. Call on Mr. Poindexter to ensure that dogfighters receive the maximum penalties, including incarceration; a permanent prohibition on having ownership, custody, or control of animals (as is allowed by state law); and any necessary psychiatric intervention. Take action by sending a letter here.
Thank you for all you've helped to accomplish so far, and we look forward to working with everyone to further call out all the cowards who think they look tough by fighting animals!

Posted by: Danielle at December 10, 2007 4:07 PMYayyy :] I'm so glad we have laws against that. It'll teach other people not to even attempt that. Why would anyone want to do that anyway? Pathetic losers who feel better about themselves if their dog can fight.
Posted by: jessie at December 10, 2007 5:39 PMomg that dirty little scumbag ... how could someone do something so cruel ... i agree he should be shredded to pieces by the pit bulls!!!

Posted by: Damien at December 10, 2007 6:05 PMThis is a find day that this maniac has got the well deserved punishment he deserved. These animals now can have their justice aginst this man and i only wish that something could have been done sooner but now he will rott in hell for eternity and i hope he will learn that what he did might as well have been a crime aginst the country because so many of us care about animal right's and we will not rest as long as cruel acts come upon animals

23 months?
The man should of gotten life.

hope he gets what he deserves in jail..he will know what cruelty really is...hope is isnt going to one of those fancy prisons...where he gets special treatment..hope he gets treated like the dogs he mistreated...
peace..
Posted by: jennie at December 10, 2007 6:46 PMI agree with Pulin that this punishment may not be strict enough. I hope that the consequences show mercy to the animals' pain and not the gamblers'.
Posted by: Mary Jane at December 10, 2007 7:50 PMi still cant get over that cat/dog de-furing video from china... how can they sleep at night? and im glad this guy got his penalty
Posted by: dochi at December 10, 2007 8:31 PMso i've been seeing people with "free mike vick" in their display names on myspace and it just disgusts me. he deserves everything he gets
Posted by: Kaitlin at December 10, 2007 10:15 PM23 months is less than two years. That's very little punishment for the lives he took and the torture he promoted. However, I'm very thankful that he did get a punishment for his cruel and unjust actions.
Posted by: AnaRae at December 11, 2007 1:47 AMgood, that jerk deserves more time in my opinion, what makes rich and famous people think they can get away with anything??? those animals suffered and died just to provide a few bucks of sleazy entertainment to some lame assholes. lets watch and see what happens to DMX who is so stupid he confeses to dogfighting in his music. boo!!!
hope michael goes to real jail and not country club jail.
it should have been longer.
Posted by: bluE at December 11, 2007 5:27 AMYes! If it were up to me animal abusers would get punishments that really fit their crimes...but 2 years in jail isn't bad considering he's a celebrity and laws regarding animal cruelty are far too lax. Also, Mr. Poindexter? Really? Haha. I'm mature. Anyway, the letter is already sent.
Posted by: Jenelle at December 11, 2007 5:37 AMim glad that hes is in jail and could honestly careless about what other people say.
he deserves what he is getting.
and should be in jail for LIFE!
no one, even in animals cases, deserve to be treated like this.
i mean.
why fight for no apparent reason??
hmm??
~~QUESTION AUTHORITY~~
This kind at school was joking saying Michael Vick was his hero.
The kid wasn't talking about Vick's football career, either.
I can take a joke, but that is just sick...
Posted by: Allie at December 11, 2007 3:46 PMThere's no doubt what Vick did was awful, and given the length of the dog fighting/gambling ring, he deserved a stiff penalty.
But he is not the biggest villain in professional sports. Everyone's outraged at what Vick did, yet every week Leonard Little lines up to play for the St. Louis Rams.
I don't know what happened to this country, but I'm three years away from moving to Canada.

I AM SO GLAD HE GOT THIS PENALTY!
Posted by: allison at December 10, 2007 2:56 PMhowever, i think that a more appropriate punishment would be to have the dogs shred him apart and see how he likes it.
