Hayden Panettiere, My Hero November 2, 2007

Hayden.jpgYou may remember a few months back I told y'all about Hayden Panettiere's passionate crusade to save the whales. Well, the Heroes star is taking on the Japanese fishermen once again, only this time it's to save dolphins, and it's in person. Man, I love her.

Hayden and five other surfers tried to disrupt the annual Japanese dolphin slaughter, in which more than 22,000 of the gentle animals are killed yearly. The brave six paddled out on their boards to try to reach a pod of dolphins before they were forced into a cove to be killed but were blocked by the fishermen who even tried to whack them with a boathook.

After heading back to the beach, the surfers gave a brief interview before quickly heading to the Osaka airport. "It was really frightening," Hayden told reporters. "Some of us were hit by the boathook. But in the end all we really worried about was the dolphins."

"It was so incredibly sad. We were so close to them and they were sky hopping, jumping out of the water to see us." It gets worse. At this point she tried to hold back the tears and added, "One little baby dolphin stuck his head out and kinda looked at me and the thought that it's no longer with us is really hard to take." How could you kill a dolphin???!!! Let alone a baby dolphin...they are heartless monsters if you ask me.

Most of the time you're lucky if you can find someone who'll take five seconds to sign a petition, but Hayden flew across the world, paddled out into the sea, and took on a mob of angry fishermen...she's awesome. This hero is the real deal. Check her out in action.

I'm surprised she would do this since she is a model for Neutragena products which test on animals.

I really didn't like Hayden before I heard about this story. To me, she was another fluff TV actres trying to become a recording artist. But now I feel differently. That's an incredible thing she did and awfully unselfish. Applause, applause.

I LOVE HAYDEN.
She is so awesome.
Those people are monsters I can't believe they tried to hit them with a boat hook!
Omg. Props to Hayden and the other 5 surfers.

man, i wish celebrities would use their power to open people's eyes to american slaughterhouse conditions. it's easy to get upset over something as unfamiliar as eating dogs or dolphins because americans view them as "cute". still, she's awesome for doing what she did...how many celebrities would go to that extent?

I think Hayden did the right thing in trying to stop the slaughter of innocent dolphins, but I have also seen pictures of her carrying around leather handbags and eating peperoni pizza. I realize we all have to start somewhere and I hope Hayden finds the courage to go completely vegan. I think what she did in Japan was extremely brave so it should be no problem for her to go veg.

Hayden rocks! I love that she is helping the cause with her celebrity status and her compassion.

I'm glad that younger celebrities like Hayden are using their visibility to give issues like this attention. If only other celebrities her age could follow in that vein.

I wish all vegetarians were as rich as hayden. I think the world would be a better place.

SHE IS AMAZING. I'm so proud to see such a young girl helping out in such a big way. I hope to be like her one day.

I'm a vegan and animal lover, but I don't support her actions in Japan. It's not her place. It's not her culture. She's not a citizen there. There are plenty of animals being mistreated here in U.S. slaughterhouses, circuses, and zoos that she could try to help.

If she is concerned about animal suffering, she should go vegan, or at least vegetarian with an effort to minimize dairy and egg products.

I dont believe that you have to be a vegeterian to care about animals. She wanted to help those dolphins from being killed. who cares if shes not a vegeterian she did the right thing helping those innocent dolphins. they couldn't defend themselves so she did.

Actually, she is a vegetarian, so..yeh!
