Vegetarians: At School and On YouTube September 6, 2007

I was sent a couple of cool news articles today that I just had to share with you lovelies.

First up is the Fox River Grove, Illinois, teacher who got kicked out of his classroom for sharing with his students why he's a vegan. Dave Warwak, a favorite teacher at Fox River Grove Middle School wanted to share with students just why he chose a vegan lifestyle ('cause animals on factory farms and in slaughterhouses are treated horribly) and was ordered to leave his classroom. Sound the alarm! I can't believe a teacher was ordered to leave his classroom for providing students with the truth. I was under the impression that students go to school to get educated...

Anyway, Warwak says, "It was never said that you have to take this and be like this. It was nothing like that. It was just hey here's some information if you're interested." Click here to read the full article for yourself.

Next up is the article about 14-year-old Amy Bareijan who wanted to learn more about a vegetarian lifestyle (after seeing a PETA video on YouTube), so she decided to post a video on YouTube asking for people's advice/experiences. She didn't expect much response, but received nearly 5,000 video views and had tons of people offering advice.

This is the type of thing I love to hear—it's amazing to know the kind of support that exists for people wanting to go vegetarian. The peta2 message boards are a great place for that kind of support. You have to be a member to post on them though, so go ahead and sign up at peta2.com/StreetTeam. You'll be addicted, I swear (and I can say that because I used to spend hours on the boards as a peta2 Street Teamer!).

To read the full article about Amy's experience, click here. And for those of you dying to know—yup, Amy is still a vegetarian, and going strong!

Hope your Thursday is going well!

Marta

PS - Our new Nugget costume is popping up all over the place. Can you imagine seeing this cuteness in person?

Favorite teacher?
When I was there, most students thought he was odd and he certainly was no favorite teacher by the students and fellow teachers.

I was going to send that article about David Warwak in :( dang.
I am from Johnsburg, Illinois which is near Fox River Grove and his story was really powerful for me.
I am actually planning on writing into the Northwest Herald (the front page headline story was about him on Thursday) about my opinion on him.
But the best thing about his story was that I got to tell my story. Currently I am in a Current International Issues class and although Warwak is not International we still talked about it because it was headline news. My teacher happened to ask if anyone was into that kind of stuff and of course I was the only who rose my hand so I got to explain to the class what it is I do, what I believe in, and the difference between vegan and vegetarian. I was so greatful that I got to tell my story without any critisism.

I read the article by Amy and I thought it was pretty sad how she doesn't know any vegetarians, there are four vegs on my x-c team alone and too many at my school to count; sounds like i should be working on that vegan lunch line. =]

Seems we have revolution here in America erupting under our noses and there is not much we can do about it. This revolution pits compassionate children against their uncaring parents. The revolution even has a name, “Vegan America – Revolt! The revolution was born from incidents surrounding Dave Warwak and his persistent attempts to teach Humane Education at Fox River Grove Middle School. Warwak said, “I can’t understand why they are fighting so hard against something so good. The World is behind us and prepared to help. There is every reason in the world for the school to go vegan and not one single reason to do otherwise PETA’s Vice President, Bruce Friedberg is offering to help Fox River Grove Middle School with its transition to a vegan diet “We'll pay for food for a week, get vegan chefs in to help and consult, whatever. The “Chicago Animal Rights Meetup Group, “Mercy for Animals, and other groups around the world are prepared to step in and help Fox River Grove Middle School become the first vegan public school in America. The “CARMG is embarking on a campaign to educate the youth of America. The group’s president, Shalesh Kumbhat and Warwak are very enthusiastic about the group’s new focus. The campaign consists of passing out small business cards to children wherever they may be. Thanks to Kumbhat’s efforts and his extensive connections, animal rights groups, vegetarians, vegans, and humane educators all over the world will be passing out business cards to children wherever they may be. Warwak said, “Groups are hitting the streets, during times when children are most likely to be out and about. Groups are already planning on a full force presence on Halloween. Even vegans who stay home will be passing out vegan candies accompanied by a message of love. Warwak, then went on to say, “So far today, I passed out 34 cards!

The business card’s front reads:

Remember the Santa Claus lie?
One lie is so big, some people prefer to keep it hidden.
So hidden, some never find out!
Do you want to live a lie?

The back reads:

Go to your favorite search engine.
Look-up “Factory Farming Look-up “Vegan
“Naming a rock, a banana, does not make it food

I've been a vegetarian for 3 weeks and 1 day! I'm eleven years old. I think that it's crule to kill and eat poor little helpless animals that never did anythin to you. What would you think if a cow shot you in the head and served you for dinner?
Meat is Murder! We save animals! :0)
