Victory: Newbury Comics Stops Selling Fur! April 17, 2007

Nobody rocks more at showing people just why fur sucks than peta2 Street Teamers. After we launched a campaign yesterday morning to get New England music store chain Newbury Comics to stop selling tacky animal figurines made from rabbit fur, many of you lovely people got busy sending messages to the music store, letting it know that you wouldn't shop at its stores until the company agreed to stop selling fur. Yesterday evening, we began receiving word that the 700+ e-mails sent to Co-Owner and Founder, Mike Dreese, were working their magic, and Mr. Dreese was responding saying that Newbury Comics had stopped selling products made of fur, and "the last few dozen leftover, unsold pieces [fur figurines] have been removed from our stores this morning." We confirmed this with Newbury Comics this morning, and it is indeed true. Yay!

Many, many thanks to those of you who wrote to Newbury Comics—this victory wouldn't be possible without you! I wish I could pat each and every one of you on the back (but most of you aren't near Norfolk, Virginia, so that's just not likely to happen.).
This is an important victory for the millions of animals who are tortured each year for their fur—I'm positive they’d thank you if they could.

P.S. – Don't forget to take the pledge to be fur-free if you haven’t already. I’ll think you’re super-extra-cool if you do!

Posted by: Sarah at April 18, 2007 12:32 PMI love Newbury Comics. However, i fucking hate that they sell fur. Despite the fact that it's domestic animals, they shouldn't be selling any fur. I'm sorry, but I won't shop there until they stop selling dead animals.
XO,
C.D.
We should thank him!

Posted by: honore Ford at April 18, 2007 11:01 PMI'm glad to hear this and hope that more stores stop selling fur. People need to be aware, too, of figurines that have fur on them, because they are not labeled as containing real fur since it is a small amount. Regardless of what amount it is, it causes a tremendous amount of suffering to the fur-bearing animal whose life was taken for it. My dad bought my sister and me each a small cat figurine (I think from a flea market)that was made in China, not knowing that they contained real cat fur. It's creepy to think that a cat was slaughtered and its fur was made into a decorative cat figurine...:(

I have been a customer of Newbury Comics for years, and finding this out about them makes me sick. I'll no longer be getting my music there. This is absolutely disgusting.
