Is That Vegan You're Wearing? April 10, 2007

Sometimes people ask me, "What do you eat?!" when they find out I'm a vegan (okay—not sometimes, more like all the time). I tell them: "The same things you eat, only vegan." Tacos? Check. Mac 'n Cheese? Check. Lasagna? Check. Ice Cream? Check.
Anyway, enough of my food ramblings (for now). So people tend to think that, as compassionate buyers, we "can't" wear anything either (I don't know about you guys, but I can wear anything I want—I just choose not to wear someone else's skin. Nasty!). It's true that leather, wool, and fur are found in a lot of clothing, but as an increasing number of people are made aware of the horrors of the skins industries, stylish alternatives are popping up everywhere.
A recent story in The Boston Globe was dedicated to vegan fashion, and posed the question, "So what should a quinoa-eating, veal-hating vegan do about her garments?" The story listed many stylish cruelty-free alternatives, which you can read about here.
That said, if you're blanking on what to wear this spring, you definitely need to check out some of our favorite spring fashions for him and her. And don't forget to visit our friends at Alternative Outfitters for 100% vegan (and totally cute) goods. What if you're at a store like Target or Payless? Just be sure to check out the label to see what it is you're buying. Here's a hint: words like synthetic and manmade mean you're good to go.
Keep in mind that vegan fashion can sometimes go terribly, terribly wrong, no matter how hard you try. See the below photo of me:

Okay, so I dressed like that mostly as a joke, but you get what I'm saying, right?
