Breaking News: POM Ends Cruel Animal Tests! January 25, 2007
Posted by Marta | Permalink | Comments ( 129 ) | TrackBack
In a move that will save countless animals from painful, deadly, and useless animal experiments, POM has just confirmed that it will no longer fund animal experiments. The statement follows just a few short months of campaigning by peta2 Street Teamers and other activists who wrote, called, and e-mailed POM by the thousands asking the juice company to stop funding cruel experiments in order to make health claims about its pomegranate juice.
Last year, PETA discovered that POM was funding outrageous experiments on animals in order to make health claims about its products. It’s hard to imagine why a company that makes pomegranate juice would be testing on animals, but what we learned was shocking. In one experiment, balloons were inflated into live rabbits to study erectile dysfunction! In another experiment, baby mice were suffocated to the point of brain damage and then had their heads cut off. Those are just a couple of the tests that POM was funding.
We immediately contacted POM, urging the company to abandon all experiments involving animals, but after being told by the company that it would continue to fund these experiments, we had no choice but to launch a full-fledged boycott. After enduring just a few months of PETA's campaign, Matt Tupper, POM president and CEO, wrote to PETA to say:
"Neither POM Wonderful nor its related entities provide funding for ongoing animal testing on POM Juice (or POM Tea). Moreover, there are no plans to do so in the future."
This is a huge victory for animals who are being tortured and killed in laboratories, and it exposes just how ridiculous the vivisection industry is as a whole—torturing animals to make health claims about fruit juice! With this announcement, POM joins other compassionate juice companies like Welch's, Naked, Frutzzo, Old Orchard, Lakewood, and many others that have provided written assurances to PETA that they do not fund or conduct any experiments on animals. (Check out CaringConsumer.com for more info.)
Thank you to everyone who participated in this campaign. If you haven't already, please click here to watch peta2's video "Testing ... One, Two, Three." And be sure to send it to all your friends!

PETA2 CAN !
I had no idea they were doing this!
I'm glad they've stopped, the juice is so good.
THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO EXCUSE/REASON TO TEST ANYTHING ON ANY ANIMALS!!!!! ALL ANIMAL TESTING IS TOTALLY NEEDLESS & JUST ATROCIOUS

Posted by: at January 25, 2007 5:22 PMYou guys, this is so wonderful. I feel so happy I could cry. After all our efforts and letters they stopped. It's amazing what we can do just by taking action. I love PETA and all the rest of you street teamers!!! Congrats!!

Posted by: Stephanie at January 25, 2007 5:50 PMYay! My friends and I were totally bummed/surprised when we found out that POM was funding animal testing. They market themselves as being the kind of corporation that wouldn't do that kind of thing.
Thanks to everyone who sent letters and such!

This is so exciting. It's so funny because I had a shoot ready to take a picture of me, and other people who support animals, holding a big sign that said "test on us" and i had the letter all ready to send and now this EXCELLENT news. You have no idea how exciting this is. Amazing work to everyone who sent in letters!!!! :D

YAY FOR THE ANIMALS!!

i sent them a lot of letters.
so now i can drink it?
Posted by: Hamida at January 25, 2007 6:58 PMcareful guys, i have heard that the only reason POM stopped funding the tests is because Whole Foods threatened to take all of their products off of Whole Foods shelves nationwide unless they stopped animal testing. It's still a good thing, even if they did it for all the wrong reasons, but I would keep an eye out to make sure the company is not funding some other tests with other products, etc.
I think I will continue to buy my pomegranate juice from companies that have never treated animals inhumanely for their products.
Posted by: Louise at January 25, 2007 7:00 PMO_O!! YESS! my/everyone else's hard work paid off!! W00T!!!! ^_____^; My day's gotten better now.

Never Give Up
Every single person can make a difference!
It's great to know that POM really felt all our boycotting. I know alot of people weren't aware but I have been hard up without my POM teas for quite a few months now. Glad they stopped the cruelty !

Posted by: Katie at January 25, 2007 8:11 PMi want to thank you all who made this possible, and most of all the animals thank you.
Posted by: judy at January 25, 2007 8:21 PMI still am so shocked that this company did these things!
When I first heard descriptions of these experiments, it just sounded like something out of the Dark Ages.
And they would have been scientifically invalid.
Just meaningless torture and death.
Posted by: Kelly at January 25, 2007 8:25 PMCongratulations everyone at PETA and all those activists out there who actually give a damn. We must be animals' voice and protect their rights - NO living breathing creature deserves to be tortured and all in the name of fruit juice - they ought to be ashamed.
GOOD ON YOU GUYS!!! KEEP IT UP EVERYONE!!!
Posted by: Leo at January 25, 2007 8:27 PMAh! I just bought stickers a couple of weeks ago for POM bottles. That's great though!!!!!
Quicker and Quicker..

Posted by: Katie at January 25, 2007 8:32 PMThis totally made my day! i was having the worst day ever and this really brightened it up. i went from sad tears to happy tears in a matter of mins (n i really was in tears lol) but awsome work everyone! its so rewarding to know that we can make a difference!!!!!!!!!!!
Posted by: Shanie at January 25, 2007 8:32 PMgo us
Posted by: Tom at January 25, 2007 9:05 PMHow convenient for them. Now that they've probably done all the testing they need to make their stupid health claims, they pander to animal activists by stopping. What about the horrible testing they have already done? I don't forgive that and I will continue to boycott their products.
Posted by: Maureen Laverty at January 25, 2007 9:07 PMheyy!!! i am sooo happy! it's a great, amazing, fantastic news, i really hope it's true and that other companies do the same :)
Posted by: florencia C.H at January 25, 2007 9:11 PMThis is an amazing victory! I am so glad that POM finally realized the atrocities that were ocurring. Thanks PETA!!!
Posted by: Shaina at January 25, 2007 9:56 PMkilling animals for beverage marketing is not science. Animal testing should be a last resort, not an industry unto itself. I hope they go out of business anyway, crazy perverts.
Posted by: shawn at January 25, 2007 10:54 PMYES!!! I'm so proud =]
Posted by: Amanda at January 25, 2007 11:32 PMI wept for joy today. In addition to Pom stopping its experiments on animals,I found out that Smithfield Co., the largest pork producer, will no longer be using gestation crates for their sows. Unfortunately, they still have to go through the horrors of the slaughterhouse and die, but every little step forward is a victory.
Posted by: carol tuskan at January 26, 2007 12:10 AMThis is what happens when compassionate people put their heads together! We did it!
Posted by: Nikki at January 26, 2007 12:49 AMPOM juice is one of the good guys now!
(Looks at the rest of the POM (insert negative word here) pics) There should have been a POM Victory here.

PEACE & JOY FOR HUMANS AND ANIMALS
They didnt have a chance. They knew that PETA WILL NOT leave them alone until they stop the experiments on animals. This is a good encouragment to bring as many companies as posible (which still experiment on animal) to the atention of the public and with our work, love to animals, ambition they will stop their cruel practice. Congratulation to all which fighted and still fighting for the animals. They do apreciate it.

Posted by: Samantha at January 26, 2007 11:43 AMwow what a relief.
i work in a cafe that serves POM and every time someone asked for it i would think about tortured animals everytime i poured it...
now all we need to do is increase interest in soy milk. the ammount of wasted milk that i see daily is ridiculous and goes to show that no one is really thinking about where their food or drink comes from. i plan on quiting soon because i don't feel right working in a place that serves meat sandwiches, wastes so much milk, and doesn't care what companies they work with (such as POM before their change of heart).
Thanks!

Posted by: Tori at January 27, 2007 2:25 PMThis is GREAT news.
Knowing what that company had been doing makes me not even want to buy their product. It makes me sick to think about drinking their juice, even though they've claimed to stop testing. How will peta make sure they "have" stopped testing on animals??
great news, good work all you out there who helped make this happen! no doubt every one of us can make a difference.

Well, now my dad can get back to drinking POM, since he was one of those people that was in the dark about what they did, until I told him the cold, hard facts. He actually hasn't had any juice from that company since I told him about what they did, and now he's happy that he can start drinking that type of juice again.

Posted by: wittle marie! at February 5, 2007 6:44 PMHey guys, there's another English person about, :)
I'm a new on blog.peta2.com
looking forward to speaking to you guys soon
It's best that all juices company, must stop their non-sense animal testings. 'Cause if you're testing on animals you don't have trust on what product you did.
More Power to PETA...
Every time I see a bottle of POM, I still get that disgusted feeling. Yay for them stopping the animal tests, but I still can't drink it anymore.
Posted by: decemberunderground at March 6, 2007 9:52 AMIt's great POM has stopped BUT I will still NEVER drink POM again! For people who are excited to go back and drink it, just remember that they were KNOWINGLY doing this until Peta pretty much FORCED them to stop. Don't be so premature to clap your hands and run right back to the drink that is supposedly supposed to be so healthy and amazing...they were sticking balloons inside animals, cutting off their heads, etc. I will NEVER drink POM EVER AGAIN..it just doesn't work that way people! Look for other brands out there that never engaged in these practices....THESE are the juices you should be drinking.
Posted by: holly j at April 9, 2007 8:08 PMIt's good that they stopped...however, I'm not going to buy a product whose only reason to not conduct cruel, horrible experiments on animals is financial loss. That's sick. Before PETA's boycott, POM flat out told PETA that they would NOT stop the animal experiments. Their cessation came only after a blow to their financial intake due to PETA's boycott. Sick jerks. "Well, okay, if cutting the heads off of baby mice is going to cut into our profits, we'll stop." Bastards.
A company shouldn't be REWARDED for ceasing to torture and kill animals ... not doing it in the first should be a given. They only stopped when threatened with financial loss.
Yeah, never touching their stuff again. Think I'll just go and plant a pomegranate tree if I want the benefit of pomegranate juice.
yay!! >w
now i can drink pomegranate juice, without having to make it. >w
