Gator Meat? Seriously? January 4, 2007

I love a good college sports rivalry as much as the next person, but this is just disgusting ... Apparently some demented Ohio State fans are eating alligator meat in preparation for Monday night's BCS championship game between OSU and the University of Florida. Wow, how macho. And what the heck are these stores in Ohio thinking in selling dead alligators' flesh?
Here's the story from ESPN:
Some Ohio stores are stocking up on alligator meat in anticipation of demand from Ohio State fans planning pregame feasts for Monday's championship between the top-ranked Buckeyes and the No. 2 Florida Gators.
Akron's West Point Market is selling alligator meat for $14.99 a pound. Columbus-area Meijer stores are selling frozen alligator fillets for $6.99 a pound, telling customers in an advertisement to "bring home your own slice of gator." The advertisement for the Meijer promotion includes a drawing of a snarling buckeye nut with the tail of an alligator sticking out of its mouth.
Meijer stores also are promoting "tailgator" parties on Saturday.

I have an idea: When Florida annihilates Ohio State on Monday night, how about we barbecue the entire OSU team?

OK, don't get me wrong, I agree with you 100%, I'm a total vegan and I definitely disagree with the whole eating of gators and stuff. But don't just blame Ohio for it. I would just like to say that I live in Florida and they sell fried gator tail, gator ribs, gator nuggets, gator anything you could imagine at just about every seafood restaurant, steak house, and novelty Florida place, just because there are a lot of aligators in this state and, i'm guessing, it's supposed to be cool or something (cool like eating flamingos maybe?) because it's florida and stuff. I have also seen it in many other states (sold along with gator heads, gator feet, gator teeth, you know the drill). So, in the end, I don't really blame Ohio for it, because really, we started it. (sorry)
(GO UF!!!)

Posted by: Missa at January 4, 2007 11:08 PMwhat the hell were they thinking? weirdos.
bleh, its muy gross, and not the least bit "macho" or a good way to prep for the game.
go florida
I know of this place in Florida that's alligator themed. Its like the alligator version of Seaworld, basically. Instead of orcas putting on shows, alligators would be unwillingly put into the spotlight. My mom also said that they sold alligator meat there, as their version of fast food.
Posted by: Kathy at January 5, 2007 2:08 PMThis is stupid.
What is the point?
OMG! Dat's soo freakin gross....I don't live in Florida, so I don't know how things run there, but I don't think it's kewl to celebrate with eatin gator meat,(er any kind of meat really...)
Posted by: Mina at January 5, 2007 9:04 PMOhio State isn't doing anything that Florida State, Tennessee, Georgia ... (this list could go on and on) hasn't done before games. Seriously ... hit Knoxville, Tenn. or Jacksonville, Fla. before Florida rolls into town. Honestly, these people root for crappy teams so it's no wonder their eithics are crappy, too.
Bring 'em on cause ...
IF YOU AIN'T A GATOR, YOU MUST BE GATOR BAIT!
Go Gators!
Posted by: Pam at January 6, 2007 2:43 AMI think the point here is not that eating alligator meat is wrong - if you are a vegan or vegetarian, you know that it is wrong. Rather, what is wrong with this promotion is using the eating of formerly endangered species as a way to pump up for the big game and ehnhance the rivalry between the two universities. it's juvenile and shame on the grocery stores for buying into such childish behavior. Out here in California there is a big USC and UCLA rivalry and before the big game each year there is always a lot of silly torture of teddy bears by USC students (UCLA are called the Bruins) but you don't see them eating bear meat do you? You don't because there'd be an outcry since bears are 'cuddly' and alligators aren't.
If Peta2 readers really want to discourage this they should contact the manager of the store promoting this horrific promotion which ESPN lists as:
>>Doug Fulton, Akron's West Point's manager of meat, seafood and oven-ready food.
Perhaps some letters to the Buckeye's booster club, Alumni association and univeristy president might have an effect as well. Tell them you hope to see them openly discourage such childish and destructive behavior in future seasons.
Posted by: Lisa P at January 6, 2007 11:32 AMWell, my sister goes to Ohio, and she thinks it's pretty weird, even though she has her screen savers that say 'gators taste like chicken' she is just joking. I think part of this is just a backlash to Florida saying how they love Buckeye's, which are poisionious, so this is just people being funny.
Posted by: Kristen at January 6, 2007 2:20 PMHow about the next time someone plays the Redskins we eat some Indians? Oh wait that doesn't make sense, it's just cruel!
I love the logic of meat-eaters.
Posted by: Aaron at January 6, 2007 2:36 PMEEEEEEEEWWWWWWWWWW! Gator meat??? Talk about corporate cruelty!
Posted by: Patricia at January 6, 2007 5:20 PMok now im ashmed 2 live in ohio. gator meat? ick go florida!
Posted by: autum at January 6, 2007 9:48 PMI totally agree that eating meat is wrong, and I have been vegetarian for 7 years. However, I do not see why this gator meat is such a big deal, why is killing an alligator any worse than killing a cow, chicken or fish?
Posted by: Anna James at January 7, 2007 6:58 PMSo...If the Greenbay Packers went to the Superbowl...Would the opposing team eat people that work in meat-packing plants? Cause that's what the Packers were named after...This ritual could open up a whole new can of cannibalism!
Posted by: Bridget at January 7, 2007 8:26 PMUm, ew. And why why why?
Posted by: Lyss at January 8, 2007 8:26 AMoh GO GATORS!!!
gross, well wtfreak are those OSU doing?
does that really make them macho?
how disgusting is that!
GO GATORS!
What makes eating alligator worse then eating cow?
Posted by: Rachael at January 8, 2007 9:01 PMWHOOOOpeee!!
gators won!
what now osu?!!?
:P
Posted by: Kimiko at January 9, 2007 9:57 AMUGA does the same thing in all of its dining halls right before the Florida game. It's a big tradition. I attend UGA but am vegan so obviously don't participate. Besides, lots of good it does us for luck! We've beaten them twice in 14 years!! I'm a gator hater! (Not the actual animal of course!)
Posted by: Megan at January 9, 2007 12:22 PMgator meat is a disgusting way to "prepare" for a game. i live in florida, and yes there is tons of gator meat being sold places. but honestly, who eats ALIGATOR MEAT ANYWAY???? yuuckkk.. even if i wasnt vegan... but then agian, every team“s fans have done something ridiculous.. but no way does it make it acceptable.
GO GATTTOORRRRRRRSS!! =)=)
Posted by: Christie at January 9, 2007 2:29 PMSo what's next? Opposums? Lions? Tigers? Beavers? Why don't the self centered wicked so-called human beings just eat the entire animal nation?! I swear! I feel like I live in the most inhumane society ever! We come from Jesus and God, I can imagine how disappointed they are gonna be the anti-animal people in the future as they die. We are humans, we are supposed to show humanity by respecting all living creatures around us that can suffer just as much as we do! The idea of gator meat has gone too far! It's bad enough that farm and sea animals are going to soon become extinct if people don't stop hurting and eating them!!! AS for purchasing dead animals to eat, that is such disrespect, why not give them a proper burial? I would pay bucks of money just to see how people react if a different creature were to hunt and eat their family members just to benefit them without caring to realize that their family members have actual lives of their own. I am so glad to be a proud and blessed vegetarian soon-to-be vegan!!!
Posted by: Bitch at January 13, 2007 3:16 PMGATOR?! DID YOU SAY GATOR?! AS IN ALLIGATOR?!?!

ewwwwww.............stupid meat lovers....gross. i mean come on bt gator meat?? what is up with that??
