Shocking News: Raccoon Dog Fur Being Sold at American Retailers December 21, 2006

Posted by Marta | Permalink | Comments ( 10 ) | TrackBack

Earlier today, news broke that tests have confirmed that fur garments from China sold at Burlington Coat Factory, JCPenney, and Macy's are made from raccoon dog fur, not "raccoon" or "coyote" fur as the products' labels would have you believe. Selling any animals' fur is cruel of course, but this finding is particularly shocking when you see the video footage taken by undercover investigators in China showing raccoon dogs being swung by their hind legs, slammed head-first into the ground, and skinned alive.

Aside from proving that these stores are misleading their customers, these tests prove that there's no way to know who you're wearing when you put on a fur or fur-trimmed coat, scarf, or pair of boots. More than half of the fur sold in the United States originates in China, so you can be sure that these stores are not the only stores selling mislabeled raccoon dog fur ... they're just the only ones who have been caught.

Not so terribly shocking, considering the industry we're talking about here. Thanks for alerting your readers to the final outcome of the fur testing.

Yeah, these cruel fur industries (esp. China) will stop at nothing to market their fur, even if it means mislabeling them for unsuspecting consumers to purchase. It's disgusting! These are beautiful animals and I can't believe the torture and gruesome death that they are put through just so some ignorant human can look "cool" in their fur.

The only way this cruel industry will cease to exist is if more people are educated on the cruelty that goes with obtaining fur.

whatever origin of fur it may be, i feel it still promotes an acceptance of wearing animals. why should allowances be made for those who wear a representation of fur? or a more expensive one? we don't wear fake human skin or a skin which is "less desired". fur free here, including all replicas.

I cannot believe this!!! I bought one of those coats. I never even thought of checking to see if it was real fur because I'm naive, I guess. I saw in the store that the trim was removable and I had planned to take it off anyway. As I was taking the fur trim off the coat, I happened to notice that it looked very real. I checked the label and saw that it was racoon. My children were in tears and I was in shock that I had bought something so horrible. NOW, I find out the real truth and I'm crushed.

I want a refund from Penney's!! I will never buy anything fur trimmed or lined again. Not even fake fur!

I think this is disgusting! I used to wear coats with fur trim and didn't think about where it came from, but after seeing this, I will never wear anything with any sort of fur again! Even if the label says that the fur is fake, you still can't trust that it is.

I cried when I seen these poor animals being skinned alive. I will never wear fur again.
