Pick Up This Month's Issue of Rolling Stone! December 11, 2006

Posted by Marta | Permalink | Comments ( 9 ) | TrackBack

In this month's issue of Rolling Stone there is a brilliant 5-page article about Smithfield Foods—the company that kills more pigs than any other in the world (they killed 27 million in 2005)—and the environmental devastation that they cause. Not only does Smithfield confine mother pigs to tiny metal crates and mutilate their babies, but, as the article explains in great detail, the company also produces almost unbelievable amounts of waste that pollute the air and water surrounding their plants. To give those of you who don't live near a pig-processing plant some idea of just how overwhelming the stench is like: The smell of dead pigs and waste causes pilots to gag at 3,000 feet. The article mentions one instance where a driver in Oklahoma was working near a "waste lagoon" when he and his truck went over the side, and it took almost three weeks to recover his body.

Ugh ... as if there weren't already enough reasons not to eat animals, there's one more: The meat industry is so downright disgusting that it's come up with something called a "waste lagoon."

Pick up a copy of Rolling Stone at your local newsstand and flip to page 89 to read the full article, and be sure to share the article with anyone you know who still eats pigs (or any other animals).

Fuck Smithfield. I live near one of their plants, and it is the worst thing I have ever smelled in my life.

this is the sickest thing I have ever heard and it is a disgrace to treat animals the way they do. I hope something could be done about it.

Uh, that is repulsive! Maybe that will bring a few more people to the vegan life-style. Wonderfully written article, and I'm very glad they printed it!

According to the alert that DawnWatch sent out about the story, Snoop's on the cover. I do believe it's the same issue that Stephen Colbert recently poked fun at...something about his "smokin', pimped out" x-mas.
