Elephant Freedom! November 15, 2006

Last night, 42 activists (including more than 20 peta2 Street Teamers) lined the entrance to the United Center in Chicago to protest the freaks from Ringling for abusing—and even killing—elephants and other animals. If you live in Chicago, and you weren't there, you should be kicking yourself right about now. Nickelodeon was there to film a show for Nick News about Street Teamer Blake Wilson who led the protest. They also filmed a bit of Blake gathering sign-ups for peta2 at the Rise Against show. The show will be airing in January. I'll give more info as it gets closer.
Here are some pics from the protest. Look at the elephants on stilts! Their signs are pretty effing clever, don't you think? "It's High Time to Ban Bullhooks" ... get it?! Because they're on stilts! OH MAN. The humor.
In other news, did you see that "Save the Turkeys" got the most votes on the CBS News: Assignment America poll that I told you about the other day? They'll be doing a story on "the latest efforts to save [turkeys] ... from your dinner plate" this Friday at 6:30 p.m. Thanks to everyone who voted! Be sure to tune in on Friday night. I really hope they mention our Butterball investigation.

I saw that CBS story - and the reporter was duped as were the people who were 'freeing' and 'saving 'the turkeys. They hunters had captured the wild turkeys specifically to release them that day. They never told the children - they lied - the kids believed they were doing a good thing and that the turkeys would live out a wonderful, peaceful life. Little did they know that these strangers and probably at least some of their parents were hunting the turkeys. And what are they eating for Thanksgiving???? In his defense, the reporter admitted he was duped.
Posted by: Dawn at November 22, 2006 10:53 PMWow!! That is really terrible!! I love Elephants!! They definatly are my favourite animals! I cannot get my mind around how anyone would want to harm or even go as far as killing such beautiful creatures!!
Posted by: Kati at January 24, 2007 10:16 PMThat is awesome guys. I wish I could have been a part of it. I try to do my share by wearing a shirt I bought that says "Whips and Chains belong in the bedroom, not in the circus. Ringling Brothers abuses animals." And on the back it has text about the terrible bullhooks and other objects they use to beat the animals. Great job guys.

It certainly was an incredible night! Thanks so much to Noah, RaeLeann, Mike, Nick News, Rise Against, Colin, Mindy, Jacoby, Jamie, and all of my buddies in HOPE. You made this happen, and together I think we made a huge statement for the benefit of the animals who are abused by Ringling's disgusting practices.
