Hug a Vegetarian Day: The E! True Hollywood Story September 29, 2006

Posted by Marta | Permalink | Comments ( 1 )

So in only a week or so, 36,176 people have signed up for "Hug a Vegetarian" Day. Now that the day is finally here, everyone has all these questions for me about how I came up with the idea, what other animal rights-themed holidays I've got up my sleeve, and where I got the HI-LARIOUS hug-related facts from (seriously, if you didn't read them, do it now--if you click on "Random Hug-Related Fact of the Moment" it will refresh and you'll see a new fact). Well, I'll answer the last question first: If you couldn't tell, I actually made up all of the hug-related facts. I first tried searching for "hug facts" on google, but was greatly disappointed at the results, so I decided to just make some up that sounded official. I am curious to find out how many hug-related deaths there are each year, though.

So, onto the other questions: How did I come up with "Hug a Vegetarian" Day you ask? Well, it all started with a tattoo I got a little over two years ago...

I wholeheartedly believe in this motto. Not in a lame hippie-ish way, but I think friends need to be more affectionate, and, well, give more hugs. And what group of people are more huggable than vegetarians? None! Since there aren't nearly enough holidays dedicated to animal rights activists, I decided to take matters into my own hands, and created one myself.

So what's next? I'm thinking "Talk Like a Vegan Day" or "Vegetarian New Year" (which, of course, is on May 12). We'll see.

Anyway, here are some pictures from "Hug a Vegetarian" Day. BEST. HOLIDAY. EVER.

PETA Crashes Cavalli Catwalk September 28, 2006

Posted by Patricia | Permalink | Comments ( 0 )

A mere two days after the Burberry invasion, guess who strikes again? That's right, PETA activists crashed yet another Milan Fashion Week event, only this time it was Roberto Cavalli's party that we invited ourselves to. Of course we mixed it up a bit though, adding two more activists to our parade of do-gooders, you know, just to keep the security guards on their toes. They must get pretty bored standing around watching waifs prance up and down the runway in clothes most real people would never be able to afford. Let's face it, our disruptions are probably the highlight of their week, unless of course a skirmish about seating or who stole who's bf breaks out between the Olsens, Lohan, and the Hiltons.

Catwalk crashers!
cav2.jpg

This time our crusaders were armed with "Cavalli = Cruelty" banners as they leaped from their seats and took over the runway, delaying the Just Cavalli show and putting a damper on the designer of death's big day. Of course all of this could have been avoided if only he would have agreed to meet with us, and to put an end to his outrageous use of fur. Cavalli, who walks around saying that he just loves animals, uses the fur from pretty much every animal you can think of in his lines. That makes me wonder what he does to the people he loves...can you say taxidermy? So, how much do you love animals? Enough to pledge not to wear them, I hope. Enjoy the pix and stay tuned because you just never know what else we've got up our sleeves for the rest of the week...

You can suck it, Cavalli!

Have You Signed Up for "Hug a Vegetarian" Day? September 27, 2006

Posted by Marta | Permalink | Comments ( 2 )

In case you haven't heard yet, peta2 kind of made up our own holiday: This Friday, September 29, is international "Hug a Vegetarian" Day. Our goal is to set a world record for the most vegetarian hugs on one single day in history. Yeah, I know, sounds fun, right? Thing is, we can't do it ourselves, since there are only a handful of us peta2 folk, so we're asking all of you to help make it happen. Here's a step-by-step explanation:

1) Click here to sign up to hug. Tell us who you plan on hugging. If you aren't vegetarian yourself, you surely know a vegetarian or two, so hug them. As long as one person in the hug is vegeterian (or vegan), it counts.
2) Use this form to send a message to your friends asking them to come sign up to hug, too. We're not fucking around - we're going for a world record here, so send it to as many people as you possible can.
3) Use one of these Web banners on your page, in a comment on your friends' pages, whatever, to spread the word about the best holiday ever.

If you need some help getting into the spirit, check out this video from the oh-so-charming Matthew Lush.

When you hug, everybody wins.

Pictures from Take Action-Orlando! September 25, 2006

Posted by Marta | Permalink | Comments ( 0 )

The first-ever peta2 Take Action conference - or as we've been referring to it in-office, "TACON" - was downright spectacular. On Saturday, about 100 people, including 7 of us from the peta2 office, got together at the University of Central Florida for workshops on how to fight for animal rights (and have fun while you're doing it), as well as a huge protest against a local KFC, and some delicious food from the Garden Cafe. For those of you who weren't able to make it, here are some pictures. If you were lucky enough to be able to be there, be sure to send me your pictures so I can post them on Flickr! (To send them to me, just e-mail them to NoahC@peta2.com or use the form here to upload them.)

So ... where do you think our next TACON should be? My vote is for Toronto. I just really want to go to Canada!

PETA Hits the Burberry Catwalk September 25, 2006

Posted by Patricia | Permalink | Comments ( 0 )

Oh, the drama that is Fashion Week.

I've gotta assume that our invites to Burberry's exclusive "invitation only" unveiling of their Spring - Summer 2007 women's collection today at Milan Fashion Week must have gotten lost in the mail.

Not to worry, we invited ourselves and wow, did we make a scene. Three activists, including peta2's very own Violet, stormed Burberry's runway today modeling their stylish "Burberry: Fur Shame," banners and chanting "Fur is dead" to make a real fashion statment and remind all of the fashionistas in attendance that fur on their backs (or collars, purses, or shoes) is blood on their hands. One would think they'd be expecting us by now, I mean we've hit all the biggest fur pushers—Dior, Lagerfeld, Oscar De la Renta, Cavalli, Gaultier, Prada—so they really shouldn't have been surprised to see us there. Nevertheless, long time PETA target Vogue editrix and resident fur hag Anna Wintour looked shocked and horrified from her front row seat...although, with a face as hideous as hers it's kinda hard to tell when she's shocked. Wouldn't you think they'd have a special section quartered off for us with a direct shot to the catwalk by now? Our fearless ladies were escorted off the runway and released without harm. We'll have more inside info from our fabulous Violet after she jets back to the UK from Milan—she's the dog's bollocks, our Violet—but for now, check out the smashing pix, and don't forget to tell Burberry that murdering animals for their fur is just plain evil.

Take that, Burberry!

Jake Gyllenhaal...A Dog's Best Friend September 22, 2006

Posted by Patricia | Permalink | Comments ( 3 )

Whether or not there's any truth to the rumors about Jake Gyllenhaal and Natalie Portman being a couple remains to be seen—who wouldn't fess up to dating either of them?!—but one thing's for sure, the man does love dogs. You can't open a magazine without seeing him running around town or strolling along the beach with his adorable adopted doggies, Atticus and Boo Radley, thank goodness.

Jake and pals
jake and dogs.jpg

So this little birdie wasn't a bit surprised to find out that he was using his super powers for good, after all, he was just voted one of the coolest celebrities in the world, along with Johnny Depp...but I'm not even gonna get started down that lust-filled path. So, back to super cute Jake, he was one of 40 celebrities to help the Mississippi Animal Rescue League out by signing giant wooden dog bones for their charity auction. And true to his dog lovin' ways, he even got Atticus and Boo in on that act by having them add their paw prints too. Aw, a moment of silence for all of the cuteness please...

I have been listening to The Hope Conspiracy's new album "Death Knows Your Name" practically non-stop since I got it on Monday. No lies. We actually did an interview with Jonas from Hope Con about vegetarianism a while back that you can check out here.

Deadly.

If you haven't already add them on MySpace and definitely pick up their new album. You won't be dissapointed. Unless you don't like good music that is.

My apologies for the blog being so short today. With half our department out of the office and down in Florida preparing for our Take Action conference things are kinds hectic around here. If you live anywhere near Orlando you better be there tomorrow!

Take care!

Open Season Gets Punk September 20, 2006

Yay, yes, woo-hoo, and other assorted expressions of glee. I just found out the Paul Westerberg (ever hear of The Replacements?) has written the score for the upcoming animated film "Open Season". The movie features seven new Westerberg songs, one of which might even get an Oscar push.

"I figured it was time to find another avenue of show business to flop in," he told AOL. Oh, Paul...so modest.

A cartoon that feature animals fighting hunters with a soundtrack written by a punk icon- you can't beat that, and I dare you to try.

The video game looks pretty sweet too. Check this out!

In other news that makes me happy, Joan Jett is going to be on Jay Leno tonight! I hope she wears one of our lovely peta2 shirts.

Free Stuff from Catalyst Records! September 19, 2006

Posted by Lara Sanders | Permalink | Comments ( 1 )

TaggedTAGGED: Music

Hey there - wanna know the inside outsides of running a vegan record label? I do, so I asked Kurt from Catalyst Records how he does it. First read the ensuing dialogue between the two of us, then scroll down to enter to win a huge prize pack from Catalyst!

What made you decided to go vegan, and how long have you been vegan?

Right now I've been vegan for 12-13 years, I always lose track. My path towards veganism started with being taught a love and respect for animals as a child. When I was exposed to vegetarianism through hardcore music later in my life, it just really started to make sense and I had to re-evaluate the way I was living, and the way I was eating. There comes a point where, as an animal lover, I had to begin to think critically about the choices I was making, and why some non-human animals were to be loved while others were to be tortured and killed for human convenience. The only solution was to change my actions to reflect my own principles, by adopting a vegetarian and shortly later, a vegan lifestyle.

All of the bands on Catalyst are vegan, right? What made you want to start an all-vegan label?

Not all of the bands that Catalyst has worked with have been all-vegan bands, but over half of the 23 releases we have put out so far have been for all-vegan bands, and the vast majority of the remainder has been for bands that are all vegetarian, with a majority of vegan members.

My goal with the label has always been to work with bands that represent the founding principles of the label, and take an active role in promoting those principles. Vegetarianism, and veganism/animal liberation especially are core beliefs of both myself and the label. We want to promote bands that in turn promote what we believe in, and give these bands a platform to express their ideas, hopefully to make changes in the world and to encourage others to do the same.

Do you have any tips or advice for bands that are just getting started that want spread the message of animal rights?

My main advice would be to just get out there and speak your mind, say what you have to say and to not let the possible reactions of others keep you from saying what needs to be said. There is a great need for bands, labels, and individuals who are willing to get out there and spread the word, and to encourage people to question their own beliefs and assumptions.

Now for contest deets: Catalyst gave us some prizes to give to you-so be appreciative! Ten ever so lucky winners will get: a "Veganism is Compassion" shirt, a Maroon CD, and a Catalyst Records comp.

All you have to do to enter is fill out the form below. Get on it!

Zach Braff's Last Kiss September 15, 2006

Posted by Patricia | Permalink | Comments ( 0 )

Zach 2.jpg

The Last Kiss starts today...I wonder what Zach Braff and Mandy "I could never wear fur, never" Moore's last kiss was like. Was it one of those, "I'll die if you don't kiss me right now" type-passionate deals or was it the obligatory, "Goodbye" peck on the cheek. Guess I'll never know, anyway, back to the movie. It's all about relationships - romantic and bff - and growing up and being lost and confused, kinda like Garden State, which incidentally starred Zach and peta2's sexiest vegetarian of 2006, Natalie Portman.

Natalie being way sexy
natalie.jpg

Come to think of it, Zach's also kinda confused and lost on Scrubs too. And his co-star Sarah Chalke is veg. Hmmm, I'm seeing two very distinct patterns here because one of Zach's co-stars in The Last Kiss is none other than the adorable Casey Affleck who is, you guessed, vegan. So A. Zach Braff thrives on confusion and B. he manages to work with at least one veg co-star on each project. Interesting, maybe this means it's only a matter of time before the cutie makes the leap himself? And what about you? You know the tagline of the movie is, "We all make choices. What's yours?" Why not take the veg pledge?

So go see The Last Kiss over the weekend. I plant to catch a matinee while perusing the mall for the latest in fall foot-wear because I haven't gotten any shoes in like a month and I'm having serious withdraw.

XO
Patricia

P.S. The soundtrack is rad. Snow Patrol, baby!

Nominations For Most Veg Friendly College September 12, 2006

Posted by nc | Permalink | Comments ( 0 )

Ok here's the scoop. Some of you go to colleges with really great daily vegan and vegetarian options like fettuccine with vegan tomato artichoke alfredo and carrot cake. Some of you go to colleges where the closest thing to a vegetarian meal is a piece of week-old fruit.

We're officially putting a call out of the top vegetarian friendly colleges in the US and Canada. If you want your school to have bragging rights, drop a line to College@peta2.com and let us know the following:

What college are you nominating?
What vegan and vegetarian options are available?
Is there a student animal rights group on campus?

For those of you whining about lack of options, have no fear, my friends! Visit peta2's Veganize Your Cafeteria page immediately!

Hungry students make poor activists. Let's get you well fed and ready to rock your campus with all sorts of amazing activism.

Oh, and don't you kids forget to find peta2 on Facebook, ok? We're right here.

Win Stuff From Bloodlined Calligraphy September 11, 2006

There are a few things in this world that fill me with rage. One is people eating animals (that's a given). The other is not ever winning anything. Ever. From the giant stuffed animal bunny I never won as a youngin, to the hoards of spent lotto scratch-off tickets that fill my car-I have never been very lucky.

But working at peta2 has changed my fate around a bit. No, I don't get an insider's chance to win the many contests we put on- I get to do something even better. I get to give things away! So it gives me great pleasure to announce this next giveaway. One reason being is that it is with a kick ass band. The other reason is that the lead singer of said band is a vegetarian, and up for our Name the War Room Contest.

So let's get down to it. Bloodlined Calligraphy has a new album coming out (Ypsilanti), and we are giving away a grand prize pack including a copy of the album, a t-shirt, and one signed poster. Happy Belated Birthday Pink September 8, 2006

Posted by Patricia | Permalink | Comments ( 1 )

So our lovely, famously outspoken pal Pink just celebrated her 27th birthday this week. Happy Birthday Pink!

Man, I would loved to have been at that party, or any party she's throwing really because that gal knows how to have a good time. And did you see her scoop up a moonman for herself and then present my Davey Havok and the rest of the AFI boys with theirs for best rock video last week? And she got a big ol' hug from Davey too. I'm sure it was the embarrassingly high number of times I voted that put them over the top. I think I deserve a hug too, damn it. Anyway, Pink also recently paired up with the fabulous queen of style, Stella McCartney to try persuade the real Queen to replace her guards' bearskin hats with an amazing faux proto-type hat that Stella designed. Check out what Pink had to say to NME about it.
NME: Did the Queen ever write back after you sent her a letter telling her to stop killing animals to make hats out of?

Pink: No she didn't - and that was one of my less angry letters. I think it might actually have a result, as it happens. Its not about making waves and pissing people off - its about getting things done in a positive way. Its not about "Oh, it's another one of Pink's angry rants..." Stella McCartney has come up with an amazing synthetic hat for the Queen's guards - it's cheaper so why not?

NME: And if I was a guard I'd rather have a Stella McCartney hat than a dead bear on my head or something.

Pink: Exactly, hell yeah, designer clothes, why not?

Apparently the queen feels that her guards would actually rather wear real dead animals on their heads, why, I have no idea, so how about signing the petition to let her know how you feel about it? Think of it as a late birthday present for Pink.

Napalm Death and First Blood visit PETA! September 8, 2006

It pays to work at peta2. In money, yes, but also with frequent impromptu visits from some of the best bands in the world. Example- yesterday the Monsters of Mayhem tour hit PETA's HQ with a vengeance. First, Barney, vocalist for Napalm Death and star in our new Save #99 ad, stopped by PETA HQ to share some stories and soy cheese pizza. Don't worry-we remembered to take pics!

Patricia, Barney, and me with my eyes closed

Later on, Carl, vocalist for First Blood, also made an appearance at PETA HQ to hang out and pick up some books and DVDs.

Then it was off to the show! Carl gave Jason, Patricia, peta2, and all the people who put themselves out on the front lines to help animals a shout out/song dedication, which was so freaking awesome. Patricia also got to challenge Carl to an arm wrestling battle backstage, which was equally as awesome.

After the show, there was some major vegan ice cream consumption, and then we called it a night.

All in all, it was a typical day in the world of peta2.

The U.S. May Finally Ban Horse Slaughter September 7, 2006

Posted by Marta | Permalink | Comments ( 0 )

If you've been watching or reading the news, you've probably noticed that there's been a lot of talk about the thousands of horses who are slaughtered for food in the U.S. every year. You also probably noticed that it looks as though the U.S. government is actually going to do something that is good for animals for a change. (Whoulda thunk it?) After administration after administration has dicked around and refused to act, today, the U.S. House voted to ban the cruel slaughter of horses, many of whom are chopped up and exported to Europe and Japan.

It's good to see mainstream media covering this story rather than what (or who) Paris is doing this week, or some other ridiculous crap. Check out these articles:

Texas' 'Dirty Little Secret': Thousands of Horses Slaughtered Every Year for Human Consumption from ABC News
Horse slaughtering bill tops House agenda from CNN
House votes to ban horse slaughter for food from the Washington Post
My favorite is this article from Forbes. Dog bless him for heading up this bill, but what he says is just kind of silly:

Opponents of the practice showed photographs of horses with bloodied and lacerated faces, the result of being crammed into trailers that would carry the animals to slaughterhouses.

"It is one of the most inhumane, brutal, shady practices going on in the U.S. today," said Rep. John Sweeney, R-N.Y., a sponsor of the ban.

Sweeney argued that the slaughter of horses is different from the slaughter of cattle and chickens because horses are American icons.

"They're as close to human as any animal you can get," said Rep. John Spratt, D-S.C.

Added Rep. Christopher Shays, R-Conn.: "The way a society treats its animals, particularly horses, speaks to the core values and morals of its citizens."

Apparently the Representative has never heard of primates. Also, it's kind of ridiculous that he thinks cows and chickens are any more deserving of being cruelly slaughtered. Just because they aren't soft and cuddly and you can't ride them doesn't mean they should have their throats slit while they're fully conscious. But I digress!

It's pretty amazing that this all comes on the same day that European Parliament issued a declaration demanding that the EU ban seal fur. Maybe humans aren't all that bad after all? No wait, nevermind that they are.

What Made You Go Vegetarian? September 6, 2006

Posted by Marta | Permalink | Comments ( 0 )

We want to know! Maybe you picked up one of peta2's "What They Never Told You..." booklets at Warped Tour and couldn't look at dead animals on your plate the same way ever again, or maybe you just wanted to lose weight and be healthier. For me, all it took was like the first 45 seconds of "Meet Your Meat" and I was like, what the fuck, this isn't food. Whatever your reason may have been for making the switch, send us a video explaining what made you go veg and how your life has changed since you cut meat out of your diet. We're holding a contest for the best "Veggie Video" (clever name, right?), and whoever sends the best one is going to get a free peta2 hoodie and lots of vegan snacks to eat. Click here if you want more info on the contest.

This video from Alexandria Carey is my favorite so far.

This video is pretty good, too, but Pulin's head is kind of funny-looking. What else is new?

Try and Tell Mac Danzig Veganism Isn't Tough September 1, 2006

Posted by Marta | Permalink | Comments ( 1 )

Seriously, just try it.

If you've never heard of Mac Danzig, let me introduce you: Mac (who is in no way related to the other Danzig) is a King of the Cage World Champion, and as we found out, is as passionate about animal rights as he is about professional fighting. He's been vegan for years, and still hasn't lost an ounce of muscle. WHAT NOW? Hear that all you little 12 year old dweebs out there who think you're so cool when you say dumb shit like "I love meat?"

Phew, calm down Noah. Anyway, click here to check out peta2's interview with Mac and to watch a video of him beating the shit out of some other dudes (don't worry, they eat meat).

Veganism + mixed martial arts = <3

PS - I think I am probably going to get washed away in a flood. Damn you Ernesto!
