One of the loves of my life is the band Tilly and the Wall. Pretty tunes, cute band members, and compassion for animals to boot! It is enough to cause a mild heart mummer. So when I heard that they wanted their fans to star in the new music video for their song "Rainbows In The Dark", I broke out my hairbrush and started practicing in my mirror.
I laid on my back, let the punk record spin
The stomping guitar, it was shooting out stars
It all went to my heart, yeah some rainbows in the dark
After trying out some new dance moves-it suddenly struck me. It would be really awesome if people wore peta2 t-shirts in the videos that they submit to the contest. Then I quickly gave myself a pat on the back.
So the task is as follows:
1. Don a peta2 shirt of some kind (homemade or otherwise)
2. Bribe a friend with vegan cookies to help video tape you
3. Rock out to "Rainbows In The Dark"
4. Send in the video
Make sure to read the rules of the contest before sending in your tape. I hope that at least one of us makes it in the final cut!

p.s. Please don't confuse "Rainbows In The Dark" with the Dio metal classic "Like A Rainbow In The Dark"

WonderPig: The Best Comic Ever July 27, 2006

Meet WonderPig, the creation of vegan artist Phil Tutton. He sent in this WonderPig strip so that, in Phil's own words, it could be used as "a way to educate in a fun, light-hearted way."
If you're an artist yourself, send us your comics or other creations at peta2@peta2.com so we can share them with the rest of the world.

Dish Dirt on Your Ex, See John Tucker For Free July 26, 2006

Avril and Deryck may be basking in the glow of newlyweddoom (and good for them, did you see her super, ultra traditional gown? Her leap from sk8er grrrl to couture queen is suiting her rather nicely) but there's been a rash of ugly celeb bust-ups lately. Lots of cheating, and greed, and he-said-she-said crap.
Admit it - you want every juicy detail when relationships, especially celeb relationships, go up in flames. I'm not ashamed to admit that I do... except for the Jen and Brad split. I her almost as much as shoes and will NEVER forgive that Brad or that Angelina for cheating, EVER. I've got a "Team Aniston" tee in every color.

And speaking of cheating, I can't wait to see John Tucker Must Die! I'll be there, giant tub of popcorn, bathtub-sized soda in hand, thank you very much, to see Brittany Snow (I her too and I miss American Dreams), Ashanti, Arielle Kebbel, and Sophia Bush (who's bounced back pretty quickly from her recent split with hubby, Chad Michael Murray) kick Jesse Metcalfe's butt for cheating. What's even cooler is that Sophia's character Beth is a vegan, animal rights activist so there's bound to be all sorts of animal rights talk in the flick.

So now you really want to see it, right? It just so happens we've got a pair of tickets for whoever has the best breakup story - so get blabbing already. Here are a few stories from peta2 staff members to get you started:
"I met a boy once at a show and he told me that he was mostly vegetarian and would likely go vegan someday soon. After a few months of having to watch him devour flesh, I realized I had been duped into dating him, and I welcomed him to dumpsville."
"When I was in high school I found out a boyfriend cheated on me right after Valentine's Day. He'd given me a teddy bear as a gift and one day I was so fed up with his lies that I took the bear into the lunchroom and proceeded to rip it to shreds. When I was done, me and my girls walked over to where he was eating and I tossed the bear onto the table and kept walking. I think he knew then that it was over."
"One of my girlfriends of 3 years broke up with me for a boy she met on the internet who plays Dungeons & Dragons and lives with his parents."
"I dated a guy for 2 years and right after our 2 year anniversary we went 'on a break.' About a week later we went to lunch to 'talk things over' and I told him the break was more like a permanent thing and due to him being the biggest asshole I had ever met, I never wanted to talk to him again. A few days later, I got an e-mail from him saying that he was 'so sorry to do this to me, but thought it best if we broke up.'
I responded with only a quote from an all time favorite movie, Waynes World:
Stacy: You know Wayne, if you're not careful, you're going to lose me.
Wayne Campbell: I lost you 2 months ago. We broke up. Are you mental? Get the net!?"
"I got dumped over AIM - a thoroughly modern way to get ditched, 'my life is just so crazy' he TYPED sitting at home at his computer in his underwear. I was heartbroken for exactly 13 minutes and then I realied that I'd had more interesting conversation with cats over the last few months. I wish I could say he was 'just a pretty face' but that was not so. He's one of those boys you can tell just by looking at them he was snotty as a kid - so thanks for dumping me you'll be really happy with that groupie who calls herself 'Sugar' and tells people she's 'so fucked up' all the time, very alternative ain't it. Anyway I'm skinny now and I have a date tomorrow night. needless to say, I had the last laugh."
All fields in bold are mandatory.

Powerful Images from Lebanon July 24, 2006

These photos, taken by a member of Beirut for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, give a glimpse into what the situation is like for the animals that are stranded in Lebanon. Many of them have been left behind in the evacuation process, with the U.S. and other nations refusing to allow people to evacuate with them.
Someone's cat underneath a tank.

Several animals line the roads.

One dog who is dangerously close to a trench.

A dog stuck in a pen next to a car that was bombed.
It's insane to me that President Bush would force Americans to leave behind their animal companions. I mean, they're family members just like children are. There's no way I'd leave my canine friend Memphis behind to be killed by a missile. That is just fucking crazy.
Click here to send a message to Bush asking him to allow Americans to evacuate with their animal companions. If you live outside the States, use one of the following to send a message to your government to ask them to do their part:

I Love Chicken 'Cause He Loves Chickens July 21, 2006

One of my all time favorite comebacks is to say "you are dead to me." Example: Recently, when someone (who will remain nameless) sent an embarrassing video of me dancing like a backup dancer for Brittany Spears to all of the peta2 staff, I told him that he is for sure- dead to me. Stay with me, because this story has a purpose - this catch phrase is soon going to spread like wildfire.
Remember our pal Chicken from the old-school hardcore outfit Western Addiction? Well he has a new side project called, what else, Dead To Me.
Dead To Me is definitely going to be a household name with their stellar debut album Cuban Ballerina. See for yourself by checking out a track off the album called "By The Throat" here.
It is hard not to love Chicken. After all, the last time peta2 sat down with him, he offered up this gem, "The more knowledge you have about how animals are treated before they end up on your plate, the less you will want to eat meat. The saddest thing is the people who do know about how poorly animals are treated, but they still eat meat anyway. Humans are selfish by nature, I suppose - but it still sucks."
So go get the album already!

Amazing Pictures from Protest Against Dog Meat
These photos were taken at a protest against dog meat in South Korea. I can't believe that shit still happens.
The thing is ... as appalling as it may seem that people to eat dogs or cats in some far away land, it's equally appalling that we here in the States eat chickens, pigs, cows, and turkeys. All animals deserve compassion, not just the cute and fuzzy ones.

From the article:
"The imagery is more powerful than anything we can say right now," McIlrath said. "When people hear some singer in a punk band telling them something, they form opinions without really listening. So we just wanted to present the images. We wanted to get these images of animals suffering or forests being destroyed out into the mainstream media. And to be honest, I don't care if someone watches it with the volume turned down and with our name blacked out, so long as they see it. Because if slaughterhouses had glass walls or clear-cut forests were in people's backyards, they'd pay attention."
So awesome-I love you Tim.

"We'd like you to get to know our bands better, so we've put together a list of their favorite worthy causes. Please take the time to learn more about them, and make a donation whenever possible. Get active and help make this world a better place!"
Even better yet, Most Precious Blood and Trustkill themselves list PETA and peta2 as organizations that they support! I salute you Trustkill for showing the direct connection music has with activism, and using your wide exposure to get the word out that we need to get our asses in gear and make this world the kinda place we want to live in. And much respect for thinking of the animals!

Help a Nerd Realize His Lifelong Dream July 13, 2006

Well, it's not really a lifelong dream, but still ...
Every day when I wake up, one of the first things I do (after finishing my chocolate Silk soymilk, of course!) is check peta2's traffic ranking to see how much it has gone up or down, and then try to figure out what caused it to change. For example, today we're the 26,983rd most popular Web site on the internet, and our three month average is up 9,553 places! Pretty damn exciting, eh? Yeah, so my job isn't always as sensational as, like, being on tour with bands, but whatever.
I <3 graphs.
For those of us in the business of Web traffic, the holy grail is Alexa.com's "Movers & Shakers" list. This list highlights sites whose traffic is going through the roof. I've often joked about creating a gambling pool around the list, but I guess no one's as into it as I am.
Anyway, here's where I need your help: In order for our little Web site to become a Mover & Shaker, lots (and I mean lots - our competition is fierce!) of people need to visit peta2.com, making my little graph above go way up. Will you help? All you have to do is promote the hell of out peta2.com all over the internet. Put Web banners everywhere. Post links to our contests and interviews where lots of people will click on them. Send "Testing ... One, Two, Three" to all your friends. Whatever, you get the point - just get thousands of millions of billions of people to come see our site. Do it for me. Well, really, you should do it for the animals. Maybe do it 90% for animals and 10% for me. Maybe 80-20, you decide.

Alt Press did a nice little top 12 countdown in honor of Warped Tour's 12th birthday featuring peta2 favorites Tom Gabel of Against Me! and his "Top 12 Summer Tracks", Rise Against'sTim McIIrath's "Top 12 Depression-Enhancing Movies", and the best one of all - Justin Sane of Anti-Flag's "Food That Save My Life On Warped Tour" - which is all vegan and delicious of course. The number one on his list was Tribe Of Two Sheiks Cracked Chili Pepper Hummus. Check out all the top 12's here.
Speaking of tasty vegan food - I just saw this video of Alkaline Trio eating various sweets from Vegan Treats from Bethlehem, PA. I knew that the band loved vegan food, but these boys have some serious cake love.

We Want Your Art July 10, 2006
Posted by Marta | Permalink | Comments ( 1 )
We're trying to class the joint up a bit ... Jack and I are working on creating a deviantART page for peta2, and since neither of us are particularly great at art, we need some help. Seriously, this is all we have so far:
If you think it's great, I made it. If you think it sucks, then it's all Jack.
Whether you're a pro at graphic design or just an aspiring artist, show us what ya got! We want everything animal rights related you've ever made: sketches, Illustrator and/or Photoshop masterpieces, comic strips with cows and chickens taking out their revenge on a farmer, you name it. The only requirement is that it be in electronic format, since we can't really do much with, like, a sculpture. It would be good if you could incorporate peta2.com into your piece somewhere, but we'll let it slide if you don't.
So, if you're interested in being a famous animal rights artist, get started by sending whatever you've made to peta2@peta2.com. Remember that we're going to post the good stuff to deviantART, so please don't send us nude self portraits. Unless of course you're vegetarian superstar and guardian of the key to my heart Natalie Portman, in which case send away.

Buy Sweet New Gear from Abstain July 4, 2006
Posted by Marta | Permalink | Comments ( 0 )
peta2 has new clothing company to love: Starting today, Abstain Clothing's doors are open. All their gear is sweatshop free and animal friendly. I personally am a fan of the "Leave Them Be" and "Vegan Tennis Squad" tees (despite the fact that I can't play to save my life).

They're also endorsed by our friends in Most Precious Blood, Sick of it All, and Shai Hulud. Best of all, a portion of all sales will go to benefit animal shelters and humane societies, so consider your purchase an investment in a better quality of life for those who cannot speak for themselves.
Head over to AbstainClothing.com now and buy lots and lots of their stuff, and add them as your friend at myspace.com/abstainclothing.

Giant Chicken Storms KFC July 3, 2006

OK, so maybe Pulin didn't quite storm the building, but still, this is pretty sweet, don't you think?
More videos from Pulin can be found here.
This article made me smile a bit:
A tiger mauled a well-known animal performer at a Moscow circus during a show, circus officials said on Sunday.
Doctors used nearly 100 stitches on Artur Bagdasarov for slash and puncture wounds, but the wounds were not life-threatening and the trainer was conscious, according to a statement posted on the performer's internet site.
Bagdasarov was trying to organise several tigers into a pyramid yesterday when a tiger named Caesar suddenly swiped at his shoulder, said Mikhail Bagdasarov, a relative and co-animal trainer.
"This lasted only 10 seconds. The tiger attacked him on his shoulder, pulled him under and tried to bend him, started to maul him with his paws," Mikhail Bagdasarov said in televised comments.
How shocking. Who would have imagined that animals from the fucking JUNGLE would attack people when they're kept in cages all day long and forced to perform stupid little tricks? Yeah, circuses fail at life.
