I had all these glorious plans to post a really juicy blog about my adventures in the UK, but Jack sort of stole my thunder by posting my KFC demo photos before I had the chance. No worries, there's plenty more:
So I spent the last week and a half in the UK being a tourist and protesting KFC. It was a pretty intense week and a half to say the least. After arriving in London, I had to cart around an enormous black case with a bodyscreen tv inside, a not-so-durable cardboard box holding the chicken costume for the demos, a pair of crutches (for the crippled chicken of course!), and a ton of posters and leaflets. I was fortunately able to stow all the protesting gear in hostels and lockers while I climbed King Arthur's Seat in Scotland and hung out with some slugs the size of my torso, rabbits, and lots of birds.
Climbing!
After a few days up north, I headed down to Brighton where I was joined by two lovely Australian ladies from London for a "KFC Tortures Chicks" demo. If you've never seen one if these demonstrations, well, look at the photos below and I think you can figure it out. We handed out hundreds of leaflets in just one hour, and crowds gathered around and watched the video playing on the body tv. (It's amazing how people are immediately intrigued when they see someone with a tv on their chest!)
On Monday, did another demo in Portsmouth, this time with the crippled chicken. The KFC was closed for "technical difficulties" for half an hour and I kicked myself for not having closed for cruelty signs with me.
It was loads of fun, but I'm glad to be home. Now, some thank yous:
- to Bob, Sean, Amanda, Emily, Matt, Bec, Nicci, Charlotte, Alexis, Siobhan, and anyone I forgot who came out to help kick some KFC ass
- to the group of really amazing vegan Australian kids I met in Brighton who helped me not die in that fairly confusing town
- to the staff at RedVeg in Brighton and Pitza Cano in Leeds for making the two best veggie burgers I have ever eaten in my entire life
- to Virgin Atlantic for offering delicious vegan meals on their flights
- to Lauren for driving me from Jersey to Virginia on zero sleep, with no food in our stomachs but the last four cake donuts we could find
In summary, meeting vegan kids (especially those that are Street Teamers) is hella fun, and I need to travel more often.
