Warped Tour Day Off June 30, 2006
Posted by Marta | Permalink | Comments ( 0 )
Yesterday, the Warped Tour had a day off, so the Warped crew and bands were given a choice: Either we could drive through and get a hotel, or drive to Louisiana and help the victims of hurricane Katrina and Rita. So of course the peta2 crew wanted to help.
Early in the morning our tour bus pulled into a vacant lot and we all jumped into an old school bus with other warped tour folks - members of Underoath, Silverstein and Anti-Flag. As Cho and I found a place to sit, the bus driver told us that we would be driving for an hour or so to Johnson's Bayou, a small community on the Gulf Coast in Cameron Parish, Louisiana, named after Daniel Johnson who came to the area in around 1790. The city took a pretty rough beating from Hurricane Rita on September 24.
We rode the school bus for about an hour (no, it wasn't the short bus) and pulled into a driveway of this nice country home. As we all unloaded from the bus we found that this nice family had cooked all of us a warm vegan Cajun meal. So we all sat around on the grass eating and joking around and getting ready for the hard work ahead...
After eating we all loaded back on the bus and drove for another 45 mins - the destruction we saw on the way to Johnson's Bayou was unbelievable. The bus driver showed me a photo of what the area looked like before Hurricane Rita and there were houses everywhere. Now there was nothing. A wasteland.
We pulled up to the first house and the bus driver asked for 7 volunteers. Pat Thetic (drummer of Anti-Flag), Cho, and I got off of the bus, and there wasn't much but an old house that was barely standing and a field full of pieces of other houses and debris. Standing in front of the house were a man, a woman, and two kids. Pat and I went up and introduced ourselves and as we approached them I noticed that they had several dogs. I pulled out of my handy-dandy PETA Disaster Prevention and Preparedness Checklist and talked with the family on the importance of having a plan for their companion animals.
We spent the rest of the day cleaning up the area and had a great time (the stories the family had about the disaster were amazing).
I am very dirty and sleepy, so I am going to shower and jump back on the tour bus so we can get to Houston in time for the show.

... this is what you're missing.
This year at the peta2 booth, we're focusing on the Save #99 campaign and that means lots of new eye-catching stuff. At each of the stops we'll be having fake "experiments" being conducted on the poor monkey, played by Jason the main man Bayless, who like #99 has huge tubes shoved up his nose. If you do get the chance to see it firsthand, it's pretty intense. Also, if you stop by our booth you might just get a free Save #99 T-Shirt! Good times.

The Spinto Band Plays With Atari and Our Hearts... June 27, 2006

Miss Violet and I's absolute favorite new band would have to be the incomparable Spinto Band. Their live shows are known to actually rock the socks off of the people that attend-I have a missing knee- high to prove it. Furthermore they have single handedly masterminded the comeback of the kazoo as a rock instrument.
Although these young lads may look like they came straight from an AV club meeting, it is a trait that paid off when Spinto singer/guitarist Nick Krill was nominated for this year's peta2 sexy vegetarian competition. Not only sexy, Nick also has mad grifting skills when it comes to veggie burgers- a talent well noted. Respect. So check em out and buy Nick a veggie burger~

P.S. Did we mention that they have a song called Atari?
NIN Tour & KFC Protests! June 27, 2006
Posted by nc | Permalink | Comments ( 0 )
When I was fourteen years old I had an amazing opportunity to see Nine Inch Nails live at Madison Square Garden in NYC. It was my first concert and remains one of the best shows I've ever seen in my life. Now, twelve years later, I'm actually out on tour with NIN tabling for peta2, and that is incredible!

We've been getting people to learn about the Chinese dog and cat fur trade, as well as showing "Meet Your Meat" and handing out all the usual What They Never Told You ... booklets, DVDs, and stickers. The response has been overwhelmingly positive since so many people have seen the video Trent Reznor narrated for PETA about the fur industry, plus this is a crowd of really open-minded people in general. We have about half a dozen shows left, so come on out and say hello to summer staffer Paul and yours truly! We'll give you a group hug. Promise!
In addition to tabling these shows, we figured some time spent protesting KFC would be pretty worthwhile (plus it impresses my KFC-hating girlfriend). In Portland, we had tons of kids out and we had television, print, and news radio coverage of the event. For about an hour, we had a huge giant crippled chicken hobbling across the crosswalk in front of the restaurant. We gave out info to so many people, and thankfully the rain didn't start until we left (seriously, have you ever smelled a wet chicken costume?!).

In Michigan, a bunch of radio stations covered the event where about a dozen of us protested to a pretty receptive town. A father and son duo decided it would be a good idea to eat buckets of chicken next to us. It didn't bother me, except for the fact that they refused to watch the video we had playing of animals being crammed into filthy warehouses, suffering from crippling diseases, and sliced open while still alive. It's one thing to disagree, but some people need to be a little more mature, don't you think? Anyway, their antics made a bunch of people driving by even more curious and clearly made our cause seem more credible. Hmmm, believe the people peacefully protesting against animal cruelty or the ones who are sucking on tortured animals' body parts?
Everyone keep up the good work on this campaign to save our homies, the chickens!

Here's Ignignokt and Err (a.k.a. the Mooninites) showing KFC what they think of their cruel treatment of 850 million chickens each year. "On the moon, we smoke while we shoot the bird."

Aqua Teen is so good it hurts. Now, upload photos of you giving KFC the bird here. Please and thank you.

Joaquin Goes to the Dogs June 23, 2006

I really couldn't love Joaquin Phoenix more ... unless of course he were Davey Havok. But seriously, who else could work that mad sexy priest angle and then turn around and look that adorable in a tiny tinfoil cap? It's that chameleon quality that's helped make him so sought-after. I mean he's crazy busy filming Oscar-winning flicks and scoring Golden Globes and yet he still finds time to help the animals and that only makes me love him more. Like how he always asks for non-leather shoes and boots for all of his roles and poses for anti-fur ads. And have you seen Earthlings? Not to mention the time he starred in PETA's very first pro-vegan TV commercial. I know I'd let him push my grocery cart.
Now our hero's coming to the defense of chained dogs in Cali by asking all the state senate to support anti-tethering Bill 1578. If passed, the bill will ban the hideous practice of chaining, which is even worse than being forced to sit through Celine Dion's Vegas show. (What is wrong with that woman, seriously, I've got five bucks for the first person who can explain it to me.) Chaining dogs is not only terribly cruel to our canine pals, but also dangerous to people, especially kids. Check out what Mr. Phoenix had to say:
*Sigh* he's just so good. You don't have to be a celeb to help chained dogs in your area, so find out how you can help end chaining in your community and get some of these cute stickers too. Joaquin would want you to.

Hello this is Jason Bayless from the Vans Warped Tour. We are on our 9th day of this tour. It has been hot and crazy on the road this year. Since this is my 5th year being out on the road with the warped I am going to bring you the inside look of what really goes on behind stage.
This year Kevin Lyman, founder/creator of the Vans Warped Tour is going vegan.
He is doing an amazing job and why wouldn't he be? I t is so easy to be vegan especially on the Warped Tour. He has told me so many great stories about being vegan on tour. So keep checking back for the video commentary from Kevin about being vegan.
So far we have been hanging out with Thursday, Rise Against, Joan Jett, Anti-flag, Buzzcocks, Nofx, Emery, Greeley Estates, and several others.
I never met the Buzzcocks before but they are one of my favorite bands. So I was caught a little off guard when Kevin Lyman walked up to me and said, "Hey Jason, the Buzzcocks want to meet you." So of course later that night when we all were hanging out at the after party I ran into the Buzzcocks. They are the nicest guys you could ever meet.
I was hanging out with Tim from Rise Against last night and we were talking about the new music video "Ready To Fall" and he was telling me how making that video really opened his eyes even more to things. I don't want to give away his words just yet so keep an eye on peta2.com for the video clip from Rise Against.
The boys brought their Vespas on tour this year so they roll around town like a little punk rock biker gang.
I need to get back out in the heat but I will keep you posted on all things Warped.

Only a few weeks after Welch's promised it would never again fund experiments on animals to sell juice and Ralph Lauren pledged to never sell fur again, Whole Foods - the largest natural foods chain in the United States - announced that it has banned the sale of live lobsters and soft-shell crabs from its stores because of concern for the animals' welfare. PETA and a coalition of other animal protection organizations have been working with Whole Foods to improve the living (and dying) conditions of the animals it sells. The store has also banned the sale of foie gras and eggs from hens cruelly confined to battery cages.

Warped Tour Kicks Out The Bucket June 21, 2006

The best music festival of the summer just got even better. You will definitely find some kick-ass music on this year's Warped Tour, but along with beach chairs, weapons, and bad attitudes, the Warped Tour website also states that you can leave your "big bucket of KFC" at home. "KFC" is even linked to our get active against KFC page! With peta2 alumni on the bill such as Rise Against, Silverstein, and Joan Jett, no wonder why Warped organizers don't want the Colonel's special brand of cruelty anywhere near the bands that give a damn about the animals. Chickens tortured and boiled alive can really put a damper on the rock don't you think?
It might also have something to do with peta2 working the festival tent circuit yet again-bringing animal awareness to the masses and makin vegans on every stop on the tour. I mean-they don't want a full scale rebellion on their hands now do they? So bring some water, some sunscreen, and yourself to the peta2 tent, but you can leave the bloody bucket at home.
This news was so exciting that it caused this woman to spontaneously break into the "Chicken Dance".

I'm big on Peanut Butter Zig Zag. If you haven't kicked dairy yet, I suggest you pick up a carton of the stuff next time you're at the local health food store. It's really tasty and no cows were tortured to make it. What more do you need to know?

Beyonce Gets a More than a Mouthful at Dinner June 16, 2006
Posted by Patricia | Permalink | Comments ( 0 )
When Beyonce's team got the bright idea to auction off a chance to dine with the singer we're sure they didn't plan on PETA placing the winning bid... She should have responded to one of our polite faxes, demonstrations, or that embarrassing full-page open letter we ran in Billboard magazine asking her to stop torturing animals for their fur and saved herself some shame. But she didn't - and here's what happened.

Watch the Video
It started as a friendly dinner with Beyonce, her sister Solange, their mother/stylist/fur pimp Tina Knowles, and two of Beyonce's "fans" at NYC hotspot Nobu 57 - but soon enough, her fans (who were actually two PETA activists undercover) were asking questions like, "Beyonce, many of your fans would like to know why you don't care about how minks, foxes, and chinchillas are gassed, strangled, and electrocuted for vanity and if you might have it in your heart to recognize that fur is not only cheap and tacky but also horribly cruel?" Go figure... she didn't want to talk about it! So the child of destiny just sat there in horror as PETA's operatives whipped out a portable DVD player and showed her Pamela Anderson's graphic expose of the cruel fur industry and asked, "Beyonce, your fans want you to do the right thing for animals who are skinned alive, beaten, and tortured for their fur, so if you won't accept our DVD, will you please log onto FurIsDead.com to see the video footage that inspired people to write to PETA to help to get you to stop wearing animal skins?" Right, so... what's for dessert?
The whole ordeal rendered her so speechless that mommy dearest had to save her from the big, bad PETA bullies by ordering the bodyguards to remove the inquisitive dinner guests from the premises. Don't you wish you could've been there to see her squirm? Well, lucky for you the "fans" caught every uncomfortable moment of it on film - so check it out and enjoy.
Think you've got a bigger heart than Beyonce? Watch the video below to get the real story on how animals raised for their fur are treated - and then sign our fur-free pledge and let the world know that you don't support cruelty to animals in the name of fashion. After all... Beyonce's new line may have shown us that clothes sure can be ugly, but they don't have to be fatal.
Sign the fur-free pledge:
Skating + peta2 = Match Made in Heaven June 14, 2006
Posted by Marta | Permalink | Comments ( 0 )
Ever since I was about 13 I've been really into this whole skating thing. I went to the X-Trials a few years back in Virginia Beach for aggressive skating, but everyone else destroyed me with tricks I can't even spell. One of my favorite parts about skating is that, like punk rock, it is a community that is generally really open-minded. I've had the pleasure of meeting a lot of really cool vegan kids through skating. At peta2, we've been lucky enough to interview and work with a whole slew of pro skaters like Ed Templeton, Scott Bourne, Brad Staba, and most recently Paul Rodriguez. I think Staba said it best:
... skateboarders are very critical when it comes to most things, so it only makes sense to be aware of your diet and intake. The better the stuff you put in your body, the better it responds to the abuse you put it through. Skateboarding is hard on your body, so anything helps.
Even if you aren't a pro and you have no plans to try out for the X-Games any time soon, you can still spread the word about animal rights when you're thrashing and grinding and doing all that. Use peta2 stencils and stickers on your skate deck and helmet (if you don't have any, e-mail peta2@peta2.com and we can send you some). If you wanna take it one step further, bring some leaflets and stickers to your local skate park or skate shop.

I've sorta started to get back into skating (skateboarding, aggresseive skating is so 1998), and apparently so has my pal Jack. Any vegan skate company owners out there want to sponsor him? He even made a video to convince you to sponsor him!
Oh Jack... anyway, if you're vegetarian or vegan and like to skate, please do shoot us an e-mail so we can send you free stuff for your deck.

Top five lists + talking about food = good times had by all. Also it's a slow news day and I didn't know what to post, so I present you with the peta2 staff's TOP FIVE VEGAN-FRIENDLY RESTAURANTS EVER 2K6! (Please note: There are far too many lovely vegan and vegetarian-friendly establishments for us to list 'em all. Check out VegCooking.com for more featured restaurants.)
|
I'm more of a faux meat and cheese fellow and really don't like lots of vegetables and gross nonsense like that, so my faves are mostly deep-fried vegan junk food.
1. Foodswings
My friend lives in NYC like 2 blocks away from the world's best vegan food, and I couldn't be more jealous. I have dreams about their buffalo "chicken" drumsticks and peanut butter bomb pies. Plus, the restaurant's owned and staffed by really sweet vegan kids and they give out peta2 DVDs and stickers. Foodswings or bust!
2. Soul Veg
The DC restaurant is well worth the 3-hour drive from my house. Their vegan mac n' cheese tastes just like the stuff you grew up with, minus the disgusting pus and all that cruelty to cows. Take your non-vegetarian friends here and show them that vegan food is delicious.
3. Trang's Viet Cuisine
This Tampa, Florida spot is 45 seconds away from a KFC I used to protest at when I lived in Florida, and their quaint atmosphere was nice after a hot day in a chicken costume. If you ever get a chance, eat their vegan "happy pancake" in my honor.
4. Red Veg
I wish this chain was not just in the UK. The one in Brighton was right around the corner from my hostel, and I ate about 35 chiliveg veggie burgers in two days. They serve breakfast too!
5. Bella's Pizzeria
Norfolk is the home of not only PETA (and myself), but also the world-renowned Bella's soy cheese pizza. I personally prefer the bianca (with garlic and olive oil instead of tomato sauce) with no toppings. If you put some soy sausage or pepporoni on top you'll think you've died and gone to heaven.
|
Her list is a little bit more vegetable-oriented than mine, and she says her name funny.
1. Tofoo Com Chay in San Jose
All vegan Vietnamese food. It's a hole-in-the-wall place, and it's SO cheap. Drumsticks, chow mein, deep-fried spring rolls, teriyaki tofu, sesame chicken, etc! It's AMAZING.
2. Chicago Diner in Chicago (duh)
Delicious milkshakes (chocolate chip peanut butter cookie dough!) and chicken parm sandwiches!
3. Gianna's in Philly
My personal favorite is the bbq chicken pizza, but I also love the eggplant parm pizza, the philly cheesesteak, the chocolate chip cheesecake and cannolis!
4. Native Foods in LA
The restaurant is California vegan, and couldn't be better. The most amazing vegan chicken sandwich with ranch dressing you will ever have.
5. Harrison Street Coffee Shop in Richmond
The artichoke tempeh club is my favorite, but they also have little treats right up front you can buy, like vegan peanut butter cups, pumpkin bread, and chocolate muffins.

"Hey Pulin, you didn't give any recommendations for what to get at your restaurants!" ... "What do you mean? I said 'breakfast' on one of them."
1. Yuan Fu
Amazing Asian food. All vegan, right outside Washington, DC in Rockville, MD.
2. Web of Life
Cafe/deli/grocery store. All vegetarian and almost all vegan including a vegan soft serve machine. Right outside Cleveland in Westlake, OH.
3. Herbivore
All vegan restaurant featuring some of the best food ever made including breakfast, with two locations in San Francisco. Try their french toast. You'll thank me later.
4. Tien Ren
All vegan Asian food with an amazing all you can eat lunch buffet in Houston, TX.
5. Spiral Diner
All vegan diner with tons of great tasting meals, desserts, and more located in Fort Worth, TX.
|
Jack upstaged us all by including a restaurant in Egypt. No one likes a show off!
1. Soul Veg (Washington, DC)
If you haven't had vegan soul food, you haven't lived. Their vegan Mac and Cheese is incredible.
2. Spiral Diner (Fort Worth, TX)
Pulin introduced me to this place when we were on the Alkaline Trio tour together. I had "The Mitch" tofu club for dinner, then came back and had the veggie meatball sandwich for breakfast the next day. Amazing.
3. Java Green (Washington, DC)
Two restaurants from DC is kinda cheating, but they're both so good. Java Green understands the important premise that it is impossible to put too many different kinds of fake meat on a sandwich.
4. Aubergine (Cairo, Egypt)
I just wanted to show off that I've been to Cairo, but this was also an amazing veg restaurant with a great atmosphere.
5. Kate's Joint (New York)
New York is a vegan paradise, but this is the best vegan brunch around, with a kickass tofu scramble. OK, this and Moby's restaurant, teany. That's really good too. Their "chicken" salad sandwich is incredible. I'm hungry now.

There's a new "super fan site" for Silk Soymilk at CowsForSilk.com. The site features awfully clever print and tv ads with three cows giving testimonials about why they prefer Silk. Frank's the best.
The great thing about Silk is that you can find it in pretty much every city in the country. I've been in podunk towns with about 15 citizens and 30 teeth between them, and still found Silk strawberry soymilk (the ones that come individual-size with a sippy straw) at the local grocery store. Should you be unable to find those, there's always the Silk vanilla creamer. Apparently you're supposed to mix it in with coffee, but I just drink it straight. I defy convention, what can I say.

Now I Have Seen It All June 7, 2006

One day all the grocery stores will be vegan and I will rest in peace; with a tummy full of treats. Yay!

You know how people sometimes say "Oh I could never be vegan, I love my (insert random disgusting animal body products here) too much." Well you know what, I was at Food Fight, the vegan grocery store in Portland, Oregon a few days back and they had something quite absurd.
Do you know what 'haggis' is?! It's so gross I think I might hurl while writing this. Ok, so it is basically sheep's hearts, lungs, and livers mixed in with some other things like animal fat and then boiled in an animal stomach!!! So yea, pretty much one of the grossest sounding things you've heard of since back in the days when you learned that those rump roasts are really an animal's butt and those chicken thighs are indeed thighs! Food Fight carries a vegan version of haggis, but I will let it slide since they also have cool stuff like soups, sandwiches, mixes for all kinds of quick vegan meals, and such wonders as that! The moral of the story is that even if you like eating gross animal-filled foods, you can go vegan and get even the sickest stuff in a version that involves no animal cruelty! Readers, you may note Chad from Food Fight holding a can of this vegan haggis, as well as, some vegan whipped cream stuff. What's that thing in his mouth, you may be wondering? Well, it's PETA's very own Chew On This. We we chatting about effective advocacy for animal rights and I think he just got confused somehow.

But hey, the reason I was out West was partially to table some shows with the Alkaline Trio. They have been touring a ton and deserve the time off they have coming. To help you get your fix of animal friendly projects the band has collaborated with us on, check out this new quiz featuring Derek and Matt, and be sure to tell us how you did!

Keep it real, kids.

I had all these glorious plans to post a really juicy blog about my adventures in the UK, but Jack sort of stole my thunder by posting my KFC demo photos before I had the chance. No worries, there's plenty more:
So I spent the last week and a half in the UK being a tourist and protesting KFC. It was a pretty intense week and a half to say the least. After arriving in London, I had to cart around an enormous black case with a bodyscreen tv inside, a not-so-durable cardboard box holding the chicken costume for the demos, a pair of crutches (for the crippled chicken of course!), and a ton of posters and leaflets. I was fortunately able to stow all the protesting gear in hostels and lockers while I climbed King Arthur's Seat in Scotland and hung out with some slugs the size of my torso, rabbits, and lots of birds.
Climbing!
After a few days up north, I headed down to Brighton where I was joined by two lovely Australian ladies from London for a "KFC Tortures Chicks" demo. If you've never seen one if these demonstrations, well, look at the photos below and I think you can figure it out. We handed out hundreds of leaflets in just one hour, and crowds gathered around and watched the video playing on the body tv. (It's amazing how people are immediately intrigued when they see someone with a tv on their chest!)
On Monday, did another demo in Portsmouth, this time with the crippled chicken. The KFC was closed for "technical difficulties" for half an hour and I kicked myself for not having closed for cruelty signs with me.
It was loads of fun, but I'm glad to be home. Now, some thank yous:
- to Bob, Sean, Amanda, Emily, Matt, Bec, Nicci, Charlotte, Alexis, Siobhan, and anyone I forgot who came out to help kick some KFC ass
- to the group of really amazing vegan Australian kids I met in Brighton who helped me not die in that fairly confusing town
- to the staff at RedVeg in Brighton and Pitza Cano in Leeds for making the two best veggie burgers I have ever eaten in my entire life
- to Virgin Atlantic for offering delicious vegan meals on their flights
- to Lauren for driving me from Jersey to Virginia on zero sleep, with no food in our stomachs but the last four cake donuts we could find
In summary, meeting vegan kids (especially those that are Street Teamers) is hella fun, and I need to travel more often.

Ringling Bros. = Assholes June 5, 2006
Posted by nc | Permalink | Comments ( 0 )
Check out this article on AOL about the law suit against Ringling Bros. and their cruel treatment of animals. Ringling can lie and deny it all they want, but the facts are plain and simple; they beat and abuse animals to get them to perform in circuses. Next time someone you know is thinking about going to an animal circus ask them how they would like to be chained up most of their life and be constantly hit with metal rods. If they still don't believe you, show them this video:
Don't forget to vote on the poll underneath the pictures!

Noah's Adventures in Wonderland June 2, 2006

Jack here with a couple of updates for your bad selves while Noah's away on a well-earned vacation in the UK. Don't tell Noah I said this, but I was totally inspired by the fact that even on his vacation, he's taking time to speak up for the chickens who are bruised, crippled, cut open, and scalded alive every day, by organizing demos against KFCs all across England. Go Noah! And thanks to everyone who came out to support him. Here are some pics:
So, a little while back we had a contest on the site where we listed peta2's favorite video games and asked everyone to vote on which one was the best. Animal Crossing, Fable, Sonic Riders, Me and My Katamari, Deer Avenger, and Resident Evil 4 made the final cut because they all have a strong message about looking out for animals (as well as being pretty sweet games). My vote was for Sonic because, even though the Sonic games have kinda been getting crappier with every new sequel, I felt like Sonic himself deserved a little recognition for freeing all those animals from that bastard Dr. Robotnik for the last 15 years. The final results of the contest were:
First place: RESIDENT EVIL 4 (by a freakin' landslide)
Second place: SONIC RIDERS
Third place: FABLE
Fourth place: ME AND MY KATAMARI
Fifth place: ANIMAL CROSSING
Sixth place: DEER AVENGER
So there you have it! The next contest we have should be for the 10 most-wanted animal abusers. These villains are my top 3. Who's on your list?
Mary J. Blige must be wearing, like, a whole family on her back in that picture. She makes Dr. Robotnik seem like a down-to-earth, friendly dude that you'd want to bring home to meet your family.
-Jack
P.S. If by any chance you're going to be in Toronto on 6/6/06, you should check out Welcome to Hell at Machinehead. It's an after-party for the Flip skateboarding team's Feast Tour stop in Toronto. Kill Cheerleader's going to be playing, and Geoff Rowley, Bob Burnquist, Arto Saari, and other such skateboarding badasses are going to be there too. Oh yeah, and it's sponsored by peta2!
