Pulin sent me this picture he took of summer staffer Mindy at Mighty O Donuts in Seattle:
Those donuts look delicious! I wish I were eating them right now. I bet I could eat a dozen in an hour. If you're ever in Seattle you should go to Mighty O and try some of their vegan treats. From what I hear, they're incredible.

Tales From The Wild Wild West Coast May 26, 2006

Greetings from Washington (the state not the capital)! Some silly person sent in this picture for the blog. In my totally objective opinion, I think it is a fun idea as long as the principal doesn't send you home early, for, well...using the F word. Although I firmly believe the consumption of dead animals' rotting corpses (a.k.a. meat) is quite inappropriate for kids, as well.

I recently wrapped up five sold out shows with Rise Against in Los Angeles, and then I tabled a couple more with Sick Of It All. The LA shows were great because I got to hear several new songs! The SOIA shows were amazing because that band has been around for twenty years now (longer than most of you have been alive), so they gets lots of respect! On this trip, I also got food from places like Vegan Glory in LA, Veganopolis in Portland, and Mighty-O Donuts in Seattle. Before I head out to spend some time with the guys in Alkaline Trio going back down the coast, there is a festival I'm going to hit up here in the Northwest. I'm pretty excited for that because I also get to catch some live sets from supportive peta2 bands including Death Cab for Cutie.
I'm off to eat some donuts and educate people on what they can do to help stop Kentucky Fried Cruelty. Anyone else have exciting weekend plans?
Great Video of Salem KFC Protest May 25, 2006

Here's a video from Salem-News.com of Lindsay's "KFC Tortures Chicks" demo in Salem, Oregon. (I got pretty excited when I spotted Star Street Teamer Kevin Loder!)
Speaking of KFC, I'm leaving for a one-week vacation in the UK in a matter of hours and while I am there I'll be holding crippled chicken demonstrations outside of KFC restaurants in Leeds, Edinburgh, and Portsmouth. UK kids, come help me out!

Proof That What We're Doing Works May 24, 2006

According to news sources, Chinese government officials have stated that the Heather Mills McCartney expose on dog and cat fur has finally gotten them to take a look at the cruel industry in their country.
China's State Forestry Administration Deputy Chairman Zhao Xuemin was quoted as saying
"Sadly this barbaric trade is driven by economic factors. But these cases you have mentioned have made a strong impression on us and we will make renewed efforts to stamp out these barbaric practices."
In addition, EU officials have proposed a directive that would ban the import, export, and trade of dog and cat fur in Europe.
Here's hoping that China actually does something to protect animals for once. Either way, let this be a reminder: It's hard for anyone to ignore you when they see videos like this. If you don't already have a streaming video on your myspace page or blog, go here to get the code for one. I hear from people pretty much every day who say that they've decided to go veg after watching "Chew On This" on my page.

Warped Tour Roll Call May 23, 2006
Posted by Marta | Permalink | Comments ( 0 )
Since the inception of peta2, Warped Tour has always been the biggest thing we do each and every year. (For those of you who have been living under a rock, we even made a Warped Tour documentary last year!) This year's tour - featuring our buddies Rise Against, Anti-Flag, Thursday, Emery, Hellogoodbye, and a whole lot more - starts in just three weeks. So we want to know - who's going?
If you're interested in hanging out with us at Warped, you've got two options. First, you can enter to win tickets for you and a friend to see the show for free. Since we're getting you in for free, the least you could do would be to stop by the table and say hi!
The second option is exclusively for you Street Teamers who are interested in actually working our table with us. This means helping us hand out stickers, gathering sign-ups, and lots of dancing. If you're interested, click here and fill out the application to table for the city nearest you.
See you there!

Fast Food Nation: The Movie May 22, 2006

It's pretty amazing that Fast Food Nation has been turned into a major motion picture. It is such a great book - quite a few people I know have gone vegan after reading it. If you haven't read it, the book, written by investigative reporter Eric Schlosser, highlights the health risks and the social and environmental consequences of the fast food industry. It'll be interesting to see how it turns out on the big screen.
I just finished watching the season finale of 24, and all I can say is "Wow."

Thank you, Mary. Superb acting!
Special delivery!

LOL@this woman. She's so ridiculous it's amazing.
That's all for today. I'm working on getting our brand new peta2 Street Team and message boards up and running. The goal is to have everything up and running in time for Warped Tour, so we'll see if we can pull that off. I think it's going to mean a whole lot of late nights, a couple hundred Clif bars, and a few six packs of Jones soda.

Another Reason Not to Eat Pigs May 16, 2006
Posted by Marta | Permalink | Comments ( 0 )
For the sixth time in just two years, a Smithfield Foodstransport truck crashed in southeastern Virginia this weekend causing the 200 or so pigs inside to become trapped, struggling to breathe. The pigs could be heard screaming above the traffic. Eventually the top of the truck was pried open, and the poor pigs inside were pulled, pushed, kicked, and prodded down a slippery ramp and into a holding pen. They were terrified and didn't know where to go; many were pulled and dragged by their ears in order to get them to move.
Copy and paste this code to put this video on your page:
These accidents are not the exception, they are the norm. Just like every other second of factory farmed animals' lives, the trip to the slaughterhouse is hell. According to industry reports, more than 170,000 pigs die in transport each year, and more than 420,000 are crippled by the time they arrive at the slaughterhouse. Rather than paying for vetrinary care for these animals, Smithfield Foods and other companies allow pigs to die slow, agonizing deaths. Workers stand there and watch them writhing in pain. And they do nothing.
It makes me sick that pigs, animals that are extremely intelligent and aware of their surroundings, have no legal protection from this sort of cruelty. Just one more reason to thank goodness that you're vegetarian, or to start being vegetarian if you aren't already.

Paris Has a Change of Heart May 15, 2006
Posted by Patricia | Permalink | Comments ( 1 )
Saying that Paris Hilton is two-faced is like saying grass is green, the sky is blue, Johnny Depp is hot... That girl changes her mind about whether or not fur is in or out as often as she changes boyfriends. One day she's spotted wearing a "Club Sandwiches, Not Seals" sweatshirt, the next, a gawdy fur coat. Make up your mind already!
After heading up PETA's 'Worst-Dressed' list and being floured alongside fur scum Julien Macdonald, it appears that Paris had another change of heart about wearing fur, and she's telling anyone and everyone who'll listen to her (not that many people these days). Seems she was persuaded to watch Heather Mills-McCartney's China fur expose showing animals being skinned alive for her pom poms. Now the heiress is saying she's getting rid of her furs and will never wear real fur again.
Can anyone be expected to take her seriously? I really hope that she's had some sort of eye-opening epiphany, I just don't know what to believe anymore. Tell us what you think.
VOTE NOW: Do you think PETA should believe Paris this time?
Yes, I think she's sincere.
No way, Paris can't be trusted!

Yesterday, after showing my peta2 credentials to some industry people, I managed to get an invite to the big PlayStation party at Dodger stadium. The surprise act at the party was none other than Incubus, whose vegetarian guitarist Ben Kenney is an old friend of ours. You can check out Ben's interview here.
Some highlights so far: These crazy NASA people have developed a controller that's supposed to measure your brainwaves while you play the game, so you can go faster depending on how much brainpower you have. I thought this was a very cool concept until I played it and got my ass kicked by an 8-year-old.
Ubisoft have this pretty sweet game out based on a movie, called Open Season, where you get to play as a bear, squirrel, and deer and save the forest from these psycho redneck hunters. It's like Deliverance, except with cute cartoon characters. OK, it's not like Deliverance at all, but it's encouraging to think that there's both a game and a movie coming out that highlight the fact that it's phenomenally weird (not to mention gruesome) that it's actually legal in this country for anyone over 12 to violently kill animals so they can put their heads on a wall. I have no idea why anyone would need that much help to understand such a basic concept, but then I lost to an 8-year-old at a brainpower game, so what do I know?
In other news, the new, motion-sensitive PS3 controller is amazing. I'm kind of a Nintendo loyalist myself, but the lines to play "Wii" are close to 3 hours long, so I've opted for instant gratification with all the new PS3 games instead.
That's all I have for now. I have to somehow drag myself back onto the exhibition floor to play more video games for the rest of the day. Did you guys hear about the Chinese kid who jumped out of a window after playing 36 straight hours of Warcraft? I feel his pain.

Your Ass Better Go Vegan May 11, 2006
Posted by nc | Permalink | Comments ( 0 )
So listen up for a minute. I want your ass (and the rest of you) to go vegan right now. It is so simple. If you care about animals, it makes no sense to pay people to chain, cage, and beat them. It is that simple.

Go to any grocery store or restaurant and you'll have it made. Need tips? Check out ten zillion accidentally vegan foods and then take a look at the favorite products of many PETA staffers. Going out to eat? No worries. Just click here for tips on that.
It is honestly so easy that you will be wondering what has taken you so long to go vegan! Plus, there is that added bonus of knowing that you are helping to prevent live baby chicks from being thrown into dumpsters for the egg industry and calves from being torn from their mothers so you can drink their milk. So you can do this. Ok? If you need help, just drop us a line at peta2@peta2.com and we'll help make it even easier. Vegan=Happy. Eggs/Dairy=Misery.
Im still catching up on rest after tabling The Bamboozle in New Jersey. It was the single best event I have ever done outreach at in my life. My girlfriend was there, too, so that didn't hurt either! Ha!
Meeting so many of you was a pleasure, and it was awesome to see friends in many of the bands who played, plus buddies in other booths like To Die For clothing and Equal Vision Records.
One of the highlights for me came early on the first day when I was able to check out some songs from The Sleeping. I've done a few shows tabling with the band before and they're great guys. Doug, the singer for The Sleeping, is vegetarian and excited to start working with peta2 in the future as their new CD hits store later this month and they plan to be on the road basically until the end of time. peta2 got a promo of their CD, Questions and Answers in the mail today and it's absolutely brilliant. Listen to some songs for yourself at myspace.com/thesleeping.
I'm making tacos with some friends tonight for dinner. It takes all of about 5 minutes to do that so I'm pretty psyched. I am hungrier than a hungry hungry hippo for some reason.
Birding for Punx May 11, 2006

You wouldn't know it, but Tony "Pointless" Croasdale, singer of R.A.M.B.O., is an avid birder (or for you squares, "bird watcher"). To show his love for all things bird, Tony is working on a documentary film titled Life Birds. The film follows Tony as he tours the world with R.A.M.B.O. and seeks birds he has never seen before, known in birder lingo as "life birds".

Birds + hardcore punk = brilliant. Check out myspace.com/lifebirds for more about the film.
Speaking of films, there's a short film contest going on right now at FilmYourIssue.com with some amazing prizes, including a paid internship at Walt Disney, trips to NYC for an award ceremony at the UN, a Toshiba laptop and RAZR mobile phone, and more. Anyone between the ages of 18 and 26 can enter, and films only need to be between 30 and 60 seconds long. There's even a category specifically for "Animal Welfare". If you're interested, check out FYI's site for rules and all that. Pulin and I are each working on films, but mine's better. I mean really, when has anyone named Pulin ever won anything?
Here's another pretty hott contest for you to enter: We've teamed up with Fanscape to give away all sorts of prizes from Taking Back Sunday and Angels & Airwaves, including a 60GB video iPod, a $200 iTunes gift card, CDs from each band, and more. Check it out!

Unless You Hate Freedom, Read This Blog May 8, 2006

Any band that is even remotely connected to Earth Crisis immediately gets us excited, but Path of Resistance stands on their own 14 legs. (Get it, because there are seven members in the band, and humans are bipeds?) Formed in 1996 during a break for Earth Crisis, Path was one of the most brutal acts in the NYHC scene during the late nineties. Now that the band's back together, we jumped at the opportunity to talk with vocalist D.J. Rose. Also, we've got some copies of the band's new album on Victory Records, Can't Stop the Truth, to give away.
peta2: Why did you go vegan?
D.J.: I turned vegetarian in the fall of 1987, just after I left high school. I had been questioning a lot of things about my life and the way I was living. I felt that eating meat did not fall into line with the way I felt about living an ethical life. I moved on to veganism in the summer of 1989 after reading PETA literature for the first time. I hadn't ever considered the suffering involved in the production of milk and eggs until it was presented to me in a clear, logical manner. Thank you PETA! The following year, Karl and I attended the first march for animal rights in Washington, D.C. I'll never forget thay day.
peta2: What do you like best about meeting other vegans?
D.J.: My favorite thing about meeting vegans is knowing that there are positive kindred spirits involved in this lifestyle. Also, I enjoy many of the other conversations that sprout (he he) forth from this common ethic/culture.
peta2: If one of your fans wants to bring presents to one of your shows, what should they bring?
D.J.: Well, as far as presents, I probably deviate from the rest of the band. I collect japanese toys. Godzilla, Ultraman, Kamen Rider, Henshin Cyborg, etc. My children and I have a pretty good collection we'd like to see grow. Bringing vegan treats is cool, but that only makes my stomach grow. Hahahahaha.
Want to score one of those CDs we mentioned? Comment and let me know what your favorite Path of Resistance, Earth Crisis, or Freya song is and why. I'll pick three winners at the end of the week, so hurry the eff up.

OMG, The Bamboozle is Totally This Weekend! May 5, 2006
Posted by nc | Permalink | Comments ( 0 )
This weekend many of PETA's Vanguard Society members are in Norfolk for our yearly all-staff meeting, where staffers from all over come to give updates on their work, to tell us all about their department's recent victories, and to plan for the year ahead. I was talking to the big boss, Ingrid, telling her about how I was getting ready to head up to New Jersey to table for peta2 at The Bamboozle, and she seemed pretty happy with how much success peta2 has been having lately at all these huge concerts and festivals (Jason just got back from Taste of Chaos, and Warped Tour is only a month away...). And of course, I have to give props to everyone reading this, especially all of you on the Street Team, for doing such a fabulous job.
Speaking of success, congrats go out to Fred and the rest of the guys in Taking Back Sunday for scoring the #2 biggest selling record in the country with their new release "Louder Now." Pick it up at your local record store. The cover looks like this... well almost.
Oh, and be sure to go here to see what Fred has to say about not eating the dead bodies of abused animals.
TBS is headlining one of the days of The Bamboozle this weekend, plus I'm looking forward to other peta2 bands' sets including Strike Anywhere and Thursday.
Are any of you going to the festival? I'd love to meet some people and even grab a few minutes of your time if you can help get signatures on our "Kentucky Fried Cruelty" petition. Or you could just stop by and bring me some Uncle Eddie's vegan cookies. Either way, come say hi!
PS - Go here and vote for our pal and vegetarian pro-snowboarder TJ Schneider in this Levi's contest. You could even win a $100 gift certificate.
Let's Make a Quilt the Size of Rhode Island! May 2, 2006
Posted by nc | Permalink | Comments ( 0 )
We need your help with a new project! We're creating a quilt in honor of the billions of sea animals who are violently killed for their flesh and the millions more who are killed and injured by recreational anglers. By creating a patch for the "Fish Quilt," you can let people know that fish are intelligent individuals who suffer and feel pain, just like cats and dogs do - fish don't deserve to be hooked or eaten!
You don't have to be a sewing expert to participate. We just need you to use your individual creativity to convey a message of compassion. Your square should represent why you care about fish or other sea animals. It could have an image of fish, a message like "Fish Are Friends, Not Food," the story of why you stopped fishing or eating fish, or a tribute to a companion fish. Just use you imagination!
Fish Quilt Instructions
These are important. You can use paints, dyes, permanent markers, stencils, or iron-on transfers of photographs as well as beads, sequins, or any other small object that would fit. It would be great if you incorporated old fishing hooks and gear to make a statement against fishing! Please choose durable fabric (no paper) and materials. We can't accept any patch that uses materials from animals (such as leather, wool, silk, or fur). All patches that follow the guidelines will be accepted regardless of artistic ability.
Each square must be constructed on a fabric backing and must be 18" x 18", or in multiples of 18" (so if you're really ambitious, you could make a patch that's 18" x 36" or 36" x 36"). You can also submit multiple quilt pieces. Please leave a half-inch seam allowance on all edges for us to use when assembling the final quilt.
Please send us your finished patches by July 15, 2006. Everyone who makes a useable patch will be thanked on FishingHurts.com. (Of course, if you'd prefer that we not put your name on the Web site, please just let us know.) If possible, please take a nice photograph of you holding your quilt square and either include it in the package or e-mail it to us at FishQuilt@peta.org.
Please send your finished patch(es) - along with your name, address, phone number, e-mail address, and the background story about your patch - to:

The film is only 95 minutes long, so pop a bag of popcorn and watch it with your friends who still eat or wear animals. By the end they'll be singing a different tune.
You can purchase Earthlings on DVD from PETA at PETACatalog.org or order it directly at ISawEarthlings.com.
Since I know all of you like free stuff, check this out: Right now on peta2 we're giving away a T-shirt, belt, hat, and sticker pack from Nephalim.
