The Scholar, Halloween, Blood Brothers 7"! October 29, 2004
Posted by nc | Permalink | Comments ( 4 )
Attention all you high school seniors ... ABC Television Network has just announced, The Scholar, a new reality series. Set at a major university, The Schola, will be the first unscripted series ever to celebrate higher education as the ultimate American prize. Fifteen high school seniors, who might not otherwise have an opportunity to pursue a top notch college education due to financial restraints, will be given the chance to compete for a full ride scholarship to the college of their choice. We would LOVE to see a vegetarian get on the show! Check out this link for all the details. What do you guys say, any of you feel like applying?
Halloween is just two days away, have you guys carved pumpkins yet? You should do what I did - carve a PETA message or Web site into the pumpkin and voila! An illuminated activism tool. We'll give you points if you send us photos of your animal rights themed pumpkin.
For all of you who are going to be Colonel Sanders, here are some tips that we include in the letter we sent you (in case you accidentally threw it out):
’Ä¢ Get yourself some old white clothes. A white button-up shirt and white pants will do. Even a plain white T-shirt could work. Spatter some "blood" all over the clothes and maybe a little on the colonel’Äôs face.
’Ä¢ Use props. Pick up a pair of horns from your local costume shop, or make your own! Colonel Sanders may have a grin on his face, but we all know that he is really quite a devil. Find a fake knife to wield and a rubber chicken to hack at.
’Ä¢ Pair up with a crippled chicken, or better yet, chase one around town.
Need to whip up extra "blood?" here’Äôs the recipe:
You’Äôll need:
’Ä¢ An empty gallon jug
’Ä¢ 3 bottles of light corn syrup
’Ä¢ 4 bottles of red food coloring
Pour all 3 bottles of syrup into the jug. Next, fill the jug half way with water, then add all 4 bottles of food coloring. Shake the jug really well, as the syrup and the water are hard to mix together. You can tell if it’Äôs well mixed by holding it up and checking for any syrup at the bottom of the jug. Once it’Äôs mixed, fill the jug the rest of the way up with water and give it one last shake.
After Halloween, send us your photos and we'll post them all here!
The moment I'm sure a lot of you who comment here on the blog have been waiting for, we will now announce the winner of the free record from The Blood Brothers that we promised. zeros__and__ones@hotmail.com will receive a copy of the Bros' first 7" on Hopscotch records. Hoorah for vegan pizza!
Additionally, we will be awarding another prize to julieclaire@gmail.com.
Leave us tons of comments over the weekend kids.
Undercover Investigation Reveals Cruelty at Yet Another KFC Supplier. October 28, 2004
Posted by nc | Permalink | Comments ( 4 )
For two weeks in September of 2004, an undercover investigator from Compassion Over Killing (COK) worked directly on the slaughter line inside a Perdue Farms slaughterhouse in Showell, Maryland’Äîa supplier to KFC.
Click here to see the horrific cruelty COK uncovered.
The abuses COK’Äôs investigator uncovered are not an exception, but in fact, standard practice for the industry. If you haven’Äôt already done so, please consider holding a demonstration for one hour outside of your local KFC. E-mail PETA2@peta.org if you’Äôre interested. We’Äôll help you out with any materials you may need, and we’Äôll even contact local activists and help you get media attention. Now more than ever, the 750 million chickens killed for KFC each year need our help.

John Feldmann, Simple Plan, Blood Bros' New Video. October 26, 2004

Take a look at this awesome article that appeared on AltPress.com today:
NO ONE BETTER CALL THIS GUY A SELLOUT, EVER AGAIN.
Goldfinger frontman John Feldmann is a strong advocate for animal rights, as you probably know. But for those who were wondering if you could a price tag on a belief system, we now know that Feldmann’Äôs is at least over five figures. Procter & Gamble recently asked Feldmann to write a commercial jingle for the company, but Feldmann turned down the lucrative offer, instead saying that he refuses to work for a company who confines test animals to cages in laboratories (P&G owns Iams, who has had their questionable animal testing policies well-documented at IamsCruelty.com). To read Feldmann’Äôs full statement, click here.
Also on AltPress, you'll find news about the new album from our buddies in Simple Plan which comes out today. If you haven’Äôt heard about the album yet, it’Äôs called Still Not Getting Any. While it might be the biggest lie in the history of music, that’Äôs not stopping the band from going out on tour in support of the disc from October 30-November 18. Mae and the Plain White T’Äôs will be opening on all dates. Head on over to SimplePlan.com for all the dates.
The Blood Brothers sent us their latest video to pass on to all of you.

The Donnas, Jenny Bain: Hermit Crab Liberator, and Love for Rise Against. October 25, 2004
Posted by nc | Permalink | Comments ( 5 )
PETA2 has an all new feature up now with The Donnas. The girls found out about peta2.com at Lollapalooza and decided that they wanted to record a PSA(Public Service Announcement for the average Joe) to get the word out about compassion for animals. Click here to give the PSA a listen.
Street Teamer Jenny Bain has a heck of a lot of courage - because she spoke up, the cruel hermit crab kiosk at her local mall has been banned, and the company that rents kiosks at 6 malls in her area has promised that it will never rent to the company again. Take a look at the new feature inspired by Jenny to see how you too can stand up for hermit crabs in your area. You can even order some cute "Keep Hermit Crabs Free" stickers for yourself!
Today at the PETA office here in Norfolk, VA, we threw a party in honor of one of our favorite bands, Rise Against. These guys continue to do amazing work for animals. Their latest video, which includes several scenes of animal rights activists spreading the word, was screened at the party to overwhelming applause. To show our appreciation for everything they have done and keep on doing, we had a feast of yummy vegan shrimp and beef, fruit, and a mouth watering cake. The band is playing here tonight, and I'm definitely going to be there. Tell them how much you love them when they stop in your town.
Busy Days... October 22, 2004
Posted by JoelBartlett | Permalink | Comments ( 7 )
Today was a busy day! I guess they all are, but today seemed especially filled with fresh ideas and tons of work. Basically that means we've got some exciting stuff coming up for our Street Team.
We've got one new PETA2 feature for you to check out today (that is if you've finished exploring our new college section yet). Nick 13 from Tiger Army has a nice message about cats that he'd like to share with you. And seriously, who doesn’Äôt love cats?
Liberation Now! is just one week away. We’Äôre scrambling to get organized for the conference! Anyone else finalizing their traveling plans?
There's tons more going on of course, but it's all still in secret phase. You'll have to keep coming back if you want more.
College, Even More Icons October 21, 2004
Posted by nc | Permalink | Comments ( 8 )
After lots and lots of work, the college section of peta2.com is complete! Check out peta2.com/College for a comprehensive guide to campus life. It doesn't matter if you're a dedicated activist or you've just gone vegetarian, we've got something for everyone. PETA2's Freshman 15 has some fantastic ideas to keep you busy. We know the older crowd who visits the Site on a regular basis gets tired of the actions aimed solely at high schoolers, so we designed college campaign pages for the old timers. Please, college students, tell us your thoughts ... we want to know what you like and what you don't.
The flood of buddy icons just doesn't stop!
You guys have been doing a good job of commenting, so keep it up. We've seen some great feedback, and we want more!
Grrr!, Halloween Materials, More Buddy Icons. October 20, 2004
Posted by nc | Permalink | Comments ( 6 )
PETA2 wants you to take a stack of PETA’Äôs Grrr! magazine and leave them in places where you normally find boring outdated magazines or lame catalogs. If you’Äôre traveling any time soon, you could slip them into the pockets on the backs of airplane seats. When you go to see your dentist or doctor, leave one behind. Grrr! is for kids, so basically anywhere kids go would be a good place to place a copy.
E-mail PETA2@peta.org to receive 10 copies of Grrr! (while supplies last). Include your full name and address in the e-mail. After you’Äôve received the magazines, e-mail StreetTeam@peta.org with a report telling us where you put them and we’Äôll give you 500 Street Team points.
Tonight we sent out the materials for the 'Colonel of Cruelty' Halloween mission. There were over 1,000 requests for the mask and other materials. That's a lot of evil Colonels!
Check out these buddy icons we recently received. That section of the Site just doesn't seem to stop growing!

Letters to the Editor, Mascots Against KFC. October 19, 2004
Posted by nc | Permalink | Comments ( 3 )
Street Teamer Leslie Joseph came through for peta2.com when we asked for letters to the editor about students' right to humane alternatives to dissection. Leslie writes, "Compassionate students want to study biology without dissecting animals. Sophisticated computer simulations, videodiscs and models have been developed to meet the needs of these students. All the studies of this issue show that students who use alternatives perform as well or better than students who use dissection."
Click here for her full letter.
Former PETA intern Mike Croland also had a letter to the editor published. Mike's letter about the cruelty behind foie gras appeared in Newsday. Take a look at the letter here. Take notes - Mike must be doing something right if he's in Newsday!
Head over to MascotMovie.com for a wonderful new movie that premiered at the Toronto Film Festival, Behind the Mascot. If you click on "Watch Movie Clips" you can view a clip called "Mascots Against KFC."
Emery Tour Diary. October 18, 2004

Here's the latest news from Emery. Check out parts one, two and three of the tour diary while you're at it.
Hey folks, Joel here. Sorry I haven't written in awhile. Tour's been
crazy. We've been all over the south as of late. Lots of sweet tea and
grits. And waffle house. Mmm, I love Waffle House. Yesterday, we were in Baton Rouge. We had a little time to kill, so we decided to go see a movie, "Friday Night Lights." Good movie. Anyway, on the way to the theater, we missed the turn so we drove on past and turned into the next lot. Made a quick U-turn, and pulled back out to make a left hand turn across the median. Dang, if there wasn't a solid median with no turn lane in it. So we were in the opposing lanes headed in the wrong direction. We said to heck with it and went for it. It was about 600 feet or so, so we figured we could make it. Traffic started coming but we had plenty of room. Only one thing wrong here. The first car in that group was a cop. He pulled us right over. He came up to the window and said, "You gotta be kidding me, man." We said we were from out of town, didn't know any better, all that crap. I guess he was in such a state of disbelief that he let us go. So that's cool. On to Texas. More to come.
Andy Dick, Free Blood Brothers 7", and Contest Winners. October 15, 2004

At the party MTV threw for his reality show, "The Assistant," Andy Dick showed up with a 7-foot-tall crippled chicken carrying a "Boycott KFC" sign. Andy joins many other celebs, such as Sir Paul McCartney, Pamela Anderson, Bea Arthur, and Russell Simmons, in demanding that KFC end the worst abuses that chickens face on factory farms and in slaughterhouses. Click here for the story.
Every week, peta2.com gives away a special prize to someone selected from that week’Äôs comments on this blog. For the next two weeks we'll be doing things a little differently. On Friday, October 29, one lucky person will score a copy of The Blood Brother’Äôs 4-song 7" from Hopscotch Records, a must have for any Blood Brother’Äôs fan. The winner will be selected from the comments that are left from Sunday, October 17 through Friday, October 29, and will be posted on the blog on the 29th. In order to win, you must comment with an e-mail address registered with the PETA2 Street Team, so if for some reason you haven't signed up yet, do it now! Also, if you haven't gotten around to it yet, take a look at peta2's interview with Johnny Whitney, keyboardist and vocalist for The Blood Brothers.

John Feldmann, Q and Not U, and PETA's Australian Wool Boycott. October 14, 2004
Posted by nc | Permalink | Comments ( 8 )
John Feldmann is probably one of the coolest people in the entire world. Heck, part of the PETA office is named after him. John's outspoken about his compassion for all animals, so as you could imagine, he was a little peeved when a representative of Procter & Gamble asked him to compose a song for one of their commercials. John fired off a letter in response to let them know that he won't have anything to do with P&G while they continue to torture animals to test Iams dog and cat food. Click here for all the details.
Also on the Site, you'll find a new interview with Q and Not U. These guys do their part for animals as well. If you've been to one of their shows recently, you may have seen some Street Teamers hard at work handing out materials and getting signups for the PETA2 e-news.
The Australian sheep wool trade, which produces 30 percent of the world’Äôs sheep wool every year, represents massive suffering for sheep, millions of whom are mutilated each year by having huge chunks of flesh carved from their rumps without any pain relief during a procedure called mulesing. Although most compassionate countries with large sheep populations do not practice mulesing because it is cruel and unnecessary, Australia continues to subject sheep to the painful procedure. Check out http://www.savethesheep.com for more information on the cruelty behind Australian sheep wool.
PETA gave the Australian government until October 2004 to stop the worst abuses of sheep in the wool trade, but they have failed to cooperate. That is why we are launching an international boycott of Australian sheep wool that will last until the practices of live export and mulesing have been banned or stopped. Please join us in this boycott and help us put an end to two of the cruelest practices in the world.
The Australian wool industry is so cruel that American retail giant Abercrombie & Fitch has pledged not to use Australian wool in any of their garments until both mulesing and live exports are stopped. Abercrombie & Fitch hopes to set a precedent in the world that other retailers can follow to help end the needless suffering of sheep who are raised for their wool. We hope that other companies will follow A&F’Äôs lead and boycott Australian wool until both mulesing and live export have been stopped.
You can help save the sheep!
Please write to Abercrombie & Fitch to thank them for their commitment to animal welfare. Send the message you sent A&F to StreetTeam@peta.org and we’Äôll give you 150 Street Team points.

Rise Against, Veg Cooking, and Anti-Fur Buddy Icons. October 13, 2004
Posted by nc | Permalink | Comments ( 3 )
Have you seen our new Rise Against feature? It was hard to narrow it down to such a short list, but we pulled it off - the top ten reasons we love Rise Against. We even have an all new leaflet with the band!
PETA has an all new website for veg recipes, restaurants, products, and more. Head over to VegCooking.com, make yourself some yummy veg dishes, then pass the link on to all of your friends and family. Even meat eaters will love the Gardenburger Meals that are featured on the Site.
Fur season is coming up, so we’Äôre planning a Street Team mission to get the message out that fur is dead. This means that once again we need some help from all those Street Teamers out there with a knack for creating stuff.
We want you to design a buddy icon for people who visit peta2.com to use to spread the word about the cruelty involved in the fur industry. The icon should be animated (although it doesn’Äôt have to be) and should say something like "Fur Is Dead" or "Fur: There’Äôs No Excuse," as well as peta2.com.
Submit your artwork to PETA2@peta.org. If we like yours, we’Äôll feature it at peta2.com/tc/t-buddyicons.html and give you 500 points.
Here is a sneek peak of two that we've already received.

In case you don't pay attention to your inbox, check this out:
Lately, PETA2 and our message of compassion for animals have been popping up all over. From magazines like CosmoGirl and AP to local newspapers and MTV, media outlets everywhere are helping young people see that animals on factory farms deserve the same compassion as those we share our homes with.
To keep up the momentum, we want to let students know about peta2.com by placing one of our ads in school yearbooks. PETA2 will pay up to $50 toward the price of placement, whether it’Äôs our "We Are Not Nuggets" ad or the adorable calf who proclaims, "I Don’Äôt Want to Be a Burger or a Milk Machine."
So if you or someone you know is on the yearbook staff at your school, check out http://www.peta2.com/tc/t-mission-money.html for the full details. We’Äôll even hook you up with 2,000 Street Team points for all your hard work for animals. With that many points, you’Äôll be well on your way to a free T-shirt!
Have any of you talked with your yearbook advisor yet?
We have an all new PETA2 toolbar for you to use with your internet browser. You can download the toolbar here. What do you think?

Cut Out Dissection, Bobby Alt, New Star Street Teamer. October 8, 2004

The "Cut Out Dissection" pages in the Take Charge section have been updated. Click here for a ton of new ideas about how to fight for animals in your science class. If you haven't already, you should also take a look at this month's "Cut Class, Not Frogs" mission.
Bobby Alt of S.T.U.N. e-mailed peta2 to tell us that he influenced Vision Streetwear to include this tag on all of their vegan shoes. Say it with me - sweeeeet!
There's an all new Star Street Teamer. His name is Anders Bruce, and though he's only 13, he's already written 3 books (check him out on Amazon.com) and done all sorts of activism for animals. Take a look at Anders' interview with peta2 here.

Red Stickers and Terror. October 7, 2004

We updated the Street Team Goods page today. You can now order red bumper stickers that read "Eating Animals", "KFC Cruelty", and "Wearing Fur" for a very reasonable 500 points.
Speaking of those infamous red stickers, we sent Street Teamers an e-mail a little while back offering to send "Eating Animals" and "KFC Cruelty" to anyone who could put them to good use. Click here if you have no idea what I'm talking about.
Anyway, we’Äôve still got lots of these stickers to give out. If you're up for a night of stickering, e-mail us at PETA2@peta.org and we’Äôll be glad to send you a stack of them. Take a look at peta2.textamerica.com if you'd like to see what other people have done with the stickers.
Also at peta2.textamerica.com you'll find this picture of Scott from the hardcore band Terror holding a KentuckyFriedCruelty.com leaflet.
Speaking of Terror, we've got an all new interview with their bassist Carl on the Site. Carl runs his own website, vegan411.com. Check out the interview here to see what Carl had to say.

A Halloween Mission and Benji! October 5, 2004

Many of you have been e-mailing and posting on the boards about receiving literature to hand out on Halloween. We also think this is a great idea, so this year, peta2 came up with a very special mission for Halloween. Click here to get all the details on how you can be the "Colonel of Cruelty"! I can't wait to see the pictures from this mission.
If you weren't already aware, we absolutely LOVE Benji Madden and the rest of Good Charlotte. Time after time these guys come through for peta2.com, and for animals of course. Click here to see what Benji is up to these days.
Here are two icons designed specifically for Web sites such as livejournal by a wonderful Street Teamer who is no stranger to the blog, Rebecca Palmer. These and several others could soon be featured on the Site along with buddy icons created by Rebecca and other Street Teamers. In the meantime, you can download them for your livejournal, and pass on a link to peta2.com to everyone on your friends list while you're at it!

The problem that some of you were having last week with commenting on the blog has been fixed, so comment away!
New Peta2 Staff, Cut Out Dissection Month, and Halifax. October 4, 2004

As of today, there is a new member of the peta2.com team here in the PETA office. Please join me in welcoming Youth Activist Liaison Drew Wilson. Many of you will be e-mailing with Drew in the near future. Drew will be here to help all of you with such things as your school projects, veganizing your cafeteria, and cutting out dissection in.
Speaking of nasty old dissection, this October is the third annual National "Cut Out Dissection" month. Check out our latest Street Team mission here for information on how you can earn major points for cutting class, not frogs. What are your plans for the month?
Today, the band Halifax stopped by the office for a photo shoot and a yummy vegan lunch. They're great guys, so give them a listen!
Street Teamer Lisa Mirl recently had this letter about the KentuckyFriedCruelty.com campaign published in her local newspaper. Check it out, and give Lisa an online pat on the back.

WHAT IF I WOULD EAT MY DOG? THEN WHAT?
S.T.U.N. drummer Bobby Alt is not only known for his wicked drumming skills’Äîthe dude is also a vegan, and hella proud. Alt has teamed up with PETA2 for their new campaign’Äî"Would You Eat Your Dog?
