PETA2 Daily Blog

Prizes and Sage Francis. September 30, 2004

Posted by nc | Permalink | Comments ( 3 )

A while back we noticed that many Peta2 Street Teamers have online blogs where you write down all of your thoughts, what you've done for the day, and all sorts of other junk. We decided that we should join in the blogging fun ourselves. So far, the blog has featured the scoop on the latest and upcoming features, Street Teamers in the news, as well as exclusive content such as daily updates, photos, and video from peta2 staffers on the road with Warped Tour and tour diaries from bands like Remembering Never and Emery.

The whole reason for us creating this blog is to keep you all up to date on what we've got going on. To give you some incentive to read our ramblings, we're going to start awarding weekly prizes to a person picked at random from the comments on that week's blog entries.

So add the blog to your favorites, come back daily and keep clicking on that "Comments" button! In order to win, be sure to use the e-mail address you registered with the Street Team when you comment. All of us here at peta2 would love to know what you think of our latest features, contests, and whatever the heck else we've got going on.

S.T.U.N., the NEA and Atkins, and New Goods. September 29, 2004

Posted by nc | Permalink | Comments ( 1 )

Bobby Alt and his bandmates in S.T.U.N. have been busy this summer. With the hectic schedule of Warped Tour, as well as an all new solo album, it's surprising that Bobby even had the time to work with peta2. Somehow he managed to squeeze us in to make an awesome trading card and to record a PSA. Now, to add to all of that, we're giving you a chance to win tons of free stuff from S.T.U.N., Vision, Hoven. Click here to enter.

The National Education Association, the largest organization of educators in the United States, has announced that it's teaming up with the fad "Atkins" diet to promote so-called "sound nutrition".

With Atkins' new deal to underwrite the NEA's nutrition and exercise efforts, the public can be assured that parents, kids, and teachers will be inundated with "low-carb" messages promoting meat and other fatty foods. Low-carb diets have been condemned by health organizations worldwide, including the American Heart Association, because they often lead to high cholesterol levels and other problems. The Atkins diet also undermines efforts to promote healthy, plant-based diets, which offer students sound nutrition based on meals that are low in fat and cholesterol-free.

Click here and let the NEA know how outraged you are that they have sold out to the dangerous fad-diet industry.

Have you taken a look at the "All Actions List" recently? There are a few all new ways to earn Street Team points. You can now stream PETA videos on your Web site, donate animal rights videotapes to a video rental store, ask your local coffee shop to offer soy milk (if it doesn’Äôt already), and more!

Along with the new actions are some new Street Team Goods. There's something for everyone, includingthe new PETA Christmas ornament and some yummy vegan marshmallows.

Emery Tour Diary, Part Three! September 28, 2004

Posted by nc | Permalink | Comments ( 0 )

Joel from Emery hooked us up with this latest installment of their tour diary. Check out parts one and two, then read on!

Whoa. Lots of stuff to write about. Heading into Chicago, you’Äôre going to drive through about a million toll booths. Jason and I were pretty much out of change by the time we got to the last one. There are the exact changes lanes, and there are the ones with people in case you don’Äôt have exact change. We began to roll through the exact change-forty cent lane with thirty-five cents. I figured, you know, thirty-five cents IS really close to forty. Jason threw the money into the basket, and much to our surprise, the gate didn’Äôt come up. Weird. So we sat there for about three minutes getting flipped off, cussed out, and laughed at. All the while, I’Äôm screaming at an attendant to help us. He didn’Äôt hear me. I think he was 120. Then, magically, the gate went up.

We played a show at Central College in Pella, IA. It was fun. They had a pep rally, I think it was homecoming or something, and afterwards we played. Name Taken was in their second song when the PA went out. For quite awhile. They got that straightened out, yada, yada, yada. While we were playing, I guess is when we found out that there wasn’Äôt a wall at the back of the stage. Josh was in the back drumming his heart out, when all of a sudden he wasn’Äôt drumming anymore. He was falling off the back of the stage, drum stool in hand. Crazy.

Man, we had some long a’Äîdrives those couple of days. I think Friday I was awake for like 21 hours straight. I drove until I started hallucinating at about 4 am.

Jason and I hit up this air/flight museum Saturday. It was pretty cool. They had flight simulators and this 4-D movie theater. I learned that a 4-D movie theater is really a 3-D movie theater where the seats move and they use smoke and stuff to make it more realistic. It was freaking cool. The flight simulator was way cool. It actually moved according to what you made it do. For example, when you did a barrel roll, the thing you were in rolled. Needless to say, we did a s-load of barrel rolls.

We played a big show in Detroit Saturday night. There were two shows going on in the same building, so they combined them. It was fun because we got to play with our old friends alexisonfire. Also there were Hopesfall and Moneen. Afterwards we drove to Toledo to meet up with our good friends The A.K.A.s. Man, I love those guys.

Been eating a lot of Denny’Äôs lately. The Boca burger is off the hook. That’Äôs all I ever eat when I go there. If you haven’Äôt tried it, I highly recommend it.

I’Äôm gonna take off now. Sorry this thing is so long, but a lot has happened and it’Äôs been awhile since I’Äôve written. I hope you’Äôre doing well. I’Äôll talk to you soon. Take care.
-Joel

PS from Jason ’Äì Joel’Äôs Birthday is October 6th. You should go to Emerymusic.com and wish him a happy birthday!

Street Teamer in the News and Kentucky Fried Cruelty. September 27, 2004

Posted by nc | Permalink | Comments ( 1 )

Sorry for not being able to update you all on the latest peta2 news on Friday. I was actually on the road with PETA's Community Animal Project (CAP) delivering dog houses to homes in the area surrounding PETA HQ in Norfolk, VA. It's satisfying work, but I'm glad to be back in the office!

Today there is an article in the Harold-Mail about Street Teamer Rachel Bibbee. Rachel and her mother have organized a fundraiser to raise money for their local fire department to purchase oxygen masks for animals. The firefighters in Hagertown, MD think she's got the right idea, and we certainly do too! Check out the article here.

Word about the KentuckyFriedCruelty.com campaign is popping up everywhere. Check out this article about Pamela Anderson and her new man, Jesus. Jesus is a circus performer with Cirque Du Soleil, which is animal-free of course. In the article, Jesus is pictured wearing the all new "Boycott KFC" t-shirt.

Speaking of KFC, check out this awesome idea Street Teamer Edith Ortiz came up with for her next demonstration. Very creative!

Emery Tour Diary. September 22, 2004

Posted by nc | Permalink | Comments ( 0 )

Below is the second chapter of the Emery tour diary. If you haven't already, take a look at part one, and keep checking back here for the latest updates from peta2.com!

Hey gang. Tour is going really well. We just played in Kansas city, MO. We were about an hour from where we recorded our record in Lawrence, KS with Ed Rose. I think that we all had a good old time. The other night in Salt Lake City, Jason and I went out with some of his friends. They brought this vegan ham that they had made. It tasted just like the real thing. It was awesome. His friends were some pretty cool people. A couple of long drives the last couple of nights. Tomorrow is only three hours, though. Good deal. I need to find an Old Navy and take back some shirts to exchange for a different size. No big deal. Last night after the Denver show, Jason and I went to a burrito place with some PETA2 Street Teamers. It was called Illegal Pete’Äôs and I couldn’Äôt even tell you where it could be. Maybe it’Äôs on 16th. I don’Äôt know. It was cool, though. Ok, I’Äôm going to bed. More soon.

These Arms Are Snakes and Contest Winners. September 21, 2004

Posted by nc | Permalink | Comments ( 1 )

Steve Snere from These Arms Are Snakes first found out about PETA2 when he was selling merch at a show we were tabling at. Steve says that he thinks pigs, chickens, and cows are just as important as a dog, a cat, or any other living being. Steve has a lot of fun changing recipes to make them vegan, and he thinks it's great to see vegetarian options like the BK Veggie popping up all over. Click here for PETA2's video interview with Steve.

Gil Schwartz, Street Teamer and former intern, had a letter to the editor published in the Minnesota Daily. Gil recently gave away vegan food to any and every passerby at his university. Take a look at Gil's letter here, and while you're at it, click here to see how you can get vegan food on the menu at your school.

The winners of the "Win a Hoodie!" contest have been chosen. They are ... Katy McNulty, Lily Cutler, Jade Indyka, Maggie Nolting, Kyle Gilgen, Isabella Sya (Li Yin), Chiuzbaian Diah, R3 Haynik, Ashley Elliott, and Alex Smith. Congrats everyone!

Part One of the Emery Tour Diary! September 20, 2004

Posted by nc | Permalink | Comments ( 1 )

Following the Strhess Tour diary written by Pete of Remembering Never, we asked our good friends from Emery to hook us up with all the juicy details of their current tour. Being the awesome dudes that they are, they agreed. Check it out:

Howdy folks. Joel from Emery here. We just set out the other day on our first headlining tour ever. Things are going well. We are all so dang excited. Can’Äôt wait to get around to all the cities and see all you guys. We played in Tacoma, WA Wednesday night, and in Boise, ID Friday night. We’Äôre looking forward to getting back out on the road again after such a long break. I had a really good hummus pita last night after the gig at a place in downtown Boise called the Pita Pit. It’Äôs on the corner of Main and Capitol just past the movie theater if you’Äôre ever in Boise. I’Äôve been hanging with my friend Jason who is really cool and he works for PETA2, and if you don’Äôt know much about them, they’Äôre really cool as well. Ok, I’Äôm gonna take off now. Sorry this thing isn’Äôt more exciting, but only being the second day of tour, not too much has happened. So I’Äôll keep you guys posted on stuff as it happens. I’Äôm new to this whole tour journal thing, so please bear with me over the next little bit. We’Äôll see you later.

More Dissection Coverage and a Special Performance. September 16, 2004

Posted by nc | Permalink | Comments ( 0 )

The Chester Village News ran an article about the right of students in the state of Virginia to not dissect. Featured in the article is Street Teamer Cat Vann. Cat says "I believe [teachers] should give us a choice ... and not just say 'here's a frog, cut it up.'" Check out the full article here. Way to go Cat! We appreciate all your hard work, and the 6 million animals killed every year for the dissection industry certainly do as well.

Rebecca Palmer did her part to draw attention to the dissection issue as well. Rebecca's letter to the editor about the demand for a student choice policy in her area was published in the Cynthian Democrat. Check out Rebecca's letter, take notes, and get writing! We'd love to see letters to the editor from Street Teamers in papers all across the country.

Taking Back Sunday, Mystery Meat, and the New E-Card. September 14, 2004

Posted by nc | Permalink | Comments ( 0 )

Nine years ago, Fred Mascherino of Taking Back Sunday made a deal with himself to try vegetarianism for one month. At the end of the month, Fred knew he would never go back to feasting on flesh. Two years later Fred went completely vegan once he realized that the dairy product and egg industries were guilty of the same cruelties as the meat industry. Fred says that even if being vegan wasn't better for the environment and human health, he'd still care too much about animals to eat them. Click here to see what Fred's got to say to the meat eaters and the vegans alike.

Are you tired of eating all that greasy cafeteria food? Do you wish that you and the other students at your school had some yummy vegan options available every day at lunch? Then hurry on over to our "Say 'No' to Mystery Meat" mission and veganize your cafeteria.

Speaking of Street Team missions, you all have been doing a great job sending out links to the new "Question Authority" animated e-card. We've been completely overwhelmed by the number of people who have taken part in this mission. We've received nearly 3,000 responses, many of which included at least 20 e-mails. A few Street Teamers who always go above and beyond the call of duty have sent the e-card to hundreds of their friends. If you haven't gotten a chance to do so yet, take a look at the "Question Authority" and pass it on to everyone you know!

We Love Vice Magazine! September 13, 2004

Posted by nc | Permalink | Comments ( 0 )

Check out this awesome photo and quote from Vice Magazine's "Dos and Don'ts" section. You gotta love Vice- PETA2 has a full page ad running in the magazine right now as well!

vice.JPG

"That's cool’Äîa diapered monkey as a pet. Why don't you just ride around town on a unicorn and dig your spurs into it every time it gets tired? Why don't you put a rainbow in a f$@#ing jar while you're at it?"

Mike Glita, bassist for Senses Fail, had a lot to say when he sat down for a one-on-one with PETA2. Mike opens his door for strays, and he knows that dogs, cats, and all other animals deserve the same treatment and equal consideration as humans do. As Mike says, if you treat others well, then you will be treated well in return. Check out the interview with Mike here.

Punk Rock Academy has teamed up with PETA2 to give away free stuff! 10 lucky winners will receive a copy of the Liberation CD. As if that weren't enough, each of the winners will also be sent autographed stickers from one of the bands on the CD, including Anti-Flag, Bigwig, and The Eyeliners. Enter the contest by clicking here.

Everybody's Squawkin' at KFC. September 10, 2004

Posted by nc | Permalink | Comments ( 0 )

Former Star Street Teamer Amandah Povilitus was interviewed in the latest edition of Electric City.

When asked what she has against KFC, Amandah responds, "Every KFC chicken has less room than a sheet of paper. They can't turn around. They're bred to be top-heavy so their legs break under the pressure. They're seven times heavier than they're supposed to be to produce more food. Their life span is 15 years but they kill them at about two months. We're trying to get them to stop using growth hormones, give them more space, and kill them when they're older so they have some life..."

Check out the full article here.

Alice Walker has a few things to say about KFC torturing chickens herself. In her poem written for CEO of Yum! Brands David Novak titled "Mother's Day," Alice writes "Suppose in a future life you come back as a chicken. You are small and fuzzy and scared. You are soft. Beautiful. Yellow, with bright orange legs. Tiny feet. Innocent, deeply curious eyes."

Now PETA is calling on all poets (and aspiring poets) to submit their own anti-KFC poems, which we’Äôll compile and send to David Novak, along with Alice Walker’Äôs "Mothers' Day," as a literary message to KFC that animal welfare must be taken seriously. The best entries, as judged by our experts, will receive a copy of "Mothers' Day" autographed by Alice Walker, and all serious entries will receive one of PETA’Äôs brand new anti-KFC celebrity posters featuring quotes from celebrities ranging from actor Pamela Anderson to scholar Dr. Cornel West.

E-mail your entry to KFCPoetryContest@peta.org, or send it by mail:

KFC Poetry Contest
PETA
501 Front St.
Norfolk, VA 23510

This is a unique opportunity for all of you creative Street Teamers to speak out for the 750 million chickens killed for KFC every year, so get writing!

Have a good weekend everyone.

Dissection Alternatives and Julia Butterfly Hill. September 9, 2004

Posted by nc | Permalink | Comments ( 0 )

Media outlets from coast to coast have picked up the Associated Press article about Virginia students being given the option not to dissect. Starting this school year, PETA's home state will join nine others across the country in offering students morally opposed to cutting up animals the option of completing an alternative project instead. The AP article quotes Jackie Domac of PETA, "We believe that dissection in the classroom is an antiquated method of instruction and promotes the widespread abuse of animals." Click here to check out the article run by Court TV. We're all very excited that Virginia legislators have taken this important step, and hope that other states will follow suit.

A PETA investigation revealed grotesque abuses to animals in laboratories at Columbia University, including subjecting baboons to invasive surgeries and leaving them to suffer and die in their cages without any painkillers. This horrific story came to PETA's attention when a courageous whistleblower, Dr. Catherine Dell'Orto, stepped forward to tell us what she had witnessed.

Now, another brave woman has stepped up to help the baboons tortured in Columbia's labs. Named one of the "Most Admired Women of the Year" by Good Housekeeping magazine and one of the "Most Intriguing People of the Year" by People magazine, Julia Butterfly Hill leapt onto the international stage when she climbed up a 200-foot ancient redwood tree and lived in its canopy for 738 days to draw attention to the plight of old-growth forests.

Julia recently wrote to her friends and supporters, asking that they stand with her to "demand an end to [Columbia's] cruel and wasteful experiments." Referring to the crude menstrual experiments conducted by Columbia experimenter Michel Ferin, Julia writes: "I have learned that while many effective projects focused on public health education and clinical work with women lack funding and while women who suffer distress during their menstrual cycles go without the medical care that they need, millions of dollars are being wasted to fund a horrible project that involves cruelty to animals. ... As a woman, I am outraged that other beings are undergoing such outrageous and inhumane torture under the guise of 'helping' women."

Take a look at columbiacruelty.com/feat/jbh/index.html to see Julia Butterfly Hill's full letter, and head over to ColumbiaCruelty.com for more information and to find out what you can do to help.

Converge and a New Star. September 7, 2004

Posted by nc | Permalink | Comments ( 0 )

Jake Bannon, singer of Converge went vegetarian at the ripe age of 13. Jake knows that education is key, and that's why he encourages friends, family, and fans of Converge to "show compassion" by cutting out those nasty animal products. With a new album coming out later this month, the guys in Converge are busy to say the least. Being the awesome guy that he is, Jake took a break from all the hard work for an interview with PETA2. Check out the interview here.

Just like Jake was when he went vegetarian, our latest Star Street Teamer Will Wimberly is 13. Don't let his age fool you; Will is the definition of active. Thanks to a screening of "Meet Your Meat" by his mom, Will is now kickin' butt with PETA's IamsCruelty.com and KentuckyFriedCruelty.com campaigns. Check out the feature on Will here for more info. Will, give yourself a pat on the back from all of us!

Drea de Matteo and Street Teamers Turned Interns. September 2, 2004

Posted by nc | Permalink | Comments ( 0 )

Today on the Site there's an all new interview with Drea de Matteo, star of The Sopranos and the upcoming Friends spin-off Joey. Drea took some time out of her busy schedule for a one-on-one about her love for animals, in particular the companion animals she shares her home with. Check out her interview with PETA2 here.

More and more young activists from the Street Team are taking some time off from all their awesome activism at home and coming to intern at PETA HQ in Norfolk, VA. Amber Coon, former Star Street Teamer, is currently on the road with our KentuckyFriedCruelty.com campaign. Chris Link, the infamous Link from the message boards, is the latest Street Teamer turned intern ... turned employee! We all expect big things from Chris in the future. Several other PETA2 legends have recently interned, are interning as we speak, or plan to come join the team over the next few months. It's great to be able to meet all the hard-working activists from across the country who have helped make PETA2 such an overwhelming success.

The moral of the story? Interning is cool, and you know you want to do it. You can fill out your application online, so drop the excuses, get working on your essay and letters of recommendation, and make plans for your going away party!

Aimee Echo From theSTART. September 1, 2004

Posted by nc | Permalink | Comments ( 0 )

Aimee Echo, frontwoman for theSTART, owes going vegetarian to the wealth of information she received from her family. Books like Diet for a New America and The Food Revolution helped Aimee come to the realization that an animal-based diet just ain't right. Aimee's cousins, aunts, uncles, and mother have all gone veg as time has gone by. While the horrific cruelty involved in the meat, dairy, and egg industries were the main reasons for most of her family members' adopting a vegetarian diet, Aimee's father's untimely death at the age of 48 due to a heart attack was a huge eye opener as well. Take a gander at Aimee's insightful interview with PETA2.com, including suggestions for kids who are having trouble with their parents and answers to all those nagging questions you may have about being vegetarian, by clicking here.

Yet another piece of proof that the PETA2 Street Team kicks butt- Mike Ski of The A.K.A.s e-mailed today to tell us he's been seeing Street Teamers spreading his interview with PETA2 everywhere. This makes Mike super happy, and of course we're pretty stoked about it too. After all, everyone who clicks on a link to The A.K.A.s feature is one more person who is going to hear about vegetarianism. We still have our eye on The A.K.A.s, so keep an eye out for more juicy little tidbits from Mike and the guys in the future!
