Victory! Angel's Gate Founder Charged

Posted on May 15, 2012 at 5:00 pm | Permalink | Comments (7)

Update: On May 15, 2012, officials filed 17 additional charges of cruelty to animals against Susan Marino, based on evidence gathered during PETA's undercover investigation. Animals like Tuxie—the cat whose gaping neck and head wound Marino picked at and who, PETA learned, died last fall after suffering terribly for many months—will finally be granted a chance at justice. Marino now faces a total of 22 cruelty charges as well as a drug-related charge.

The Delaware County, New York, District Attorney's Office has filed charges of cruelty to animals as well as a drug-related charge against Susan Marino, the woman responsible for the horrific suffering of hundreds of animals at Angel's Gate, Inc., which she founded, operates, and dares to call "a hospice and rehabilitation center."

PETA's investigation of this hellhole exposed the daily neglect and terrible suffering of disabled, elderly, and ailing animals, many of whom had been shipped to Marino by well-meaning but severely uninformed individuals and agencies, including the New York Center for Animal Care and Control (NYCACC), which doomed Malcolm the Chihuahua and hundreds of other animals to die slowly at Angel's Gate through its "New Hope" program.

PETA had provided the District Attorney with the evidence that our investigator gathered while volunteering at Angel's Gate. Our investigator saw Marino allow animals to suffer, sometimes for weeks, from treatable conditions as well as terminal illnesses without providing veterinary care, medication, or pain relief. Paralyzed animals dragged themselves until they developed bloody ulcers. Animals developed urine scald after being left in soaked diapers for up to two days. Dehydrated animals were denied water, and others were forced to stay outside in freezing temperatures. The bodies of dead animals were left among those of the living for days.

While Marino has been charged, the nightmare is not over for the animals at Angel's Gate, as they have not yet been seized. Please help us ensure their welfare and the safety of future victims by joining us in urging the New York State Attorney General to revoke Angel's Gate's nonprofit status and ensure that the animals are removed from Marino's custody. Please click here to send a letter to the Attorney General, and please, when your animal companions become elderly or ill, let them live out their final days with dignity in the comfort of their own homes, surrounded by their families, not at the mercy of a conniving stranger.

  • The University of Colorado–Boulder now offers numerous veg options at every meal, and this includes vegan desserts, such as chocolate Rice Crispy treats and multiple varieties of cupcakes and cookies. (Inside scoop: Vegan Daiya cheese pizza and "mac 'n' cheez" with cashew "cheez" sauce are coming soon!)

Check out the pic from its Meatless Monday event, where the school provided students with information on the benefits of going veg for their health and the environment, as well as free cookies!

HELP! Atlanta May Lose Animal Control!

Posted on May 14, 2012 at 4:02 pm | Permalink | Comments (7)

Because of Ringling Bros., Atlanta may lose its animal control services! That means no stray dogs and cats will be picked up and no injured-animal calls will be answered. Why? Last year, Fulton County, Georgia, banned the use of bullhooks, which are used to hit and jab elephants. Fulton County provides Atlanta with animal control services, and Atlanta has adopted all of Fulton County's animal protection laws, including the bullhook ban.

But Ringling Bros. is trying to convince Atlanta not to enforce the law, and if Atlanta officials listen to Ringling Bros. and fail to enter into an animal control services agreement with Fulton County in order to prevent the bullhook ban from being effective, the city risks losing all animal control services in Atlanta.

It's not fair to leave all animals unprotected just so that the circus can use bullhooks to beat and torment elephants when it comes to town once a year.

YOU CAN HELP STOP THIS!

Contact Mayor Kasim Reed at kreed@atlantaga.gov and urge him to immediately sign an agreement for animal control services with Fulton County that will ensure that all the animal protection laws are enforced, including the bullhook ban.

Gunky buildup in your pores can lead to dreaded nasty blackheads—thank goodness there's a simple solution that's affordable and vegan! Not only are conventional store-bought pore strips pricey, they also contain unnatural chemicals and preservatives. Not cool, not cool. Try this simple home remedy instead:

  • Mix the almond milk and agar in a bowl and microwave for 10 to 20 seconds.

Top 5 Ways to Help Animals With Your Mom This Mother's Day!

Posted on May 11, 2012 at 2:57 pm | Permalink | Comments (4)

Want to show your mom some ♥ this Mother's Day and help animals at the same time? Well, you're in luck because peta2 is here to give you the top five ways that you can make it happen! Check it out:

  1. Volunteer at your local animal shelter! Spread the love and head to your local shelter with your mom this weekend and spend some time giving much needed TLC to kitties and pups! You can also check out a local animal sanctuary if you're lucky enough to live near one.
  2. Cook your mom a vegan meal. Grab that apron and impress your momma by whipping up a delish vegan dish!
  3. Buy her vegan chocolates. Chocolate is a mom's best friend, right? Pick up a box of vegan chocolates for yours to nom this weekend! I grabbed my mom a box of PETA's spring vegan chocolates this year, and I'm pretty sure I'll be reaching "favorite child" status as soon as she opens them.
  4. Head to the dog park. Have a pup in your life? Take a trip to your local dog park and get in some quality chill time with your mum while your dog has some playtime with his or her canine pals.
  5. Go shopping! Show your mom just how easy it is to find cruelty-free fashion and cosmetics at the mall! Check out our cruelty-free fashion blog series and our cruelty-free shopping guide for tips on which stores to hit up first.

So no matter what you do with your mom this weekend, remember that all moms deserve to spend time with their babies this Mother's Day (and every day)!

What are you doing with your mom this Mother's Day?

Alexandra Craig Takes on Ringling Bros.!

Posted on May 11, 2012 at 1:37 pm | Permalink | Comments (3)

Elephants in the hands of Ringling Bros. are whipped as well as yanked and beaten with heavy steel-tipped bullhooks—sometimes until bloody! :(  The good news? Street Teamers are taking action against the cruelty of the circus!

When Street Teamer Alexandra Craig found out that the circus was coming to town, she took it upon herself to speak up for these animals. Alexandra and her friends protested for four days! Many people who were heading toward the circus even changed their minds and went to a nearby music festival instead when they learned about the horrible ways that elephants and other animals are abused in circuses. Way to go, Alexandra!

Check out these rockin' pics from the protest:

Is an animal circus coming to your town? E-mail us at peta2@peta2.com, and we'll help you plan your very own protest and hook you up with all the materials that you'll need! :) Don't forget to join the Street Team for more ideas on how you can speak up for animals!
